My doctor wants to switch me from an SSRI to a mood stabilizer. I have been off of Zoloft (after over 12 years) for 2 weeks. I started the mood stabilizer. I am completely nonfunctional. Feel totally out of it. Has anyone else gone through this? How do you get through it. Is it possible to be on an SSRI forever?

How long did you take to go off of Zoloft? Docs seem to want to do it in one or two weeks which is way to fast for someone who gets withdrawals. A very slow taper is the best way. All my docs have had me go off in about a week when switching but I am lucky and never seem to get withdrawal from it.

I was lucky with Zoloft, no withdrawals but I had to go to zero straightaway because I developed an allergy. However, with Effexor and Cymbalta I had pretty bad withdrawals, the Effexor because I went cold turkey from a really high dose and the Cymbalta because although I tapered down my new med wasn't a SNRI or SSRI. In both cases the symptoms calmed down after about a week.

If you are having problems, docs sometimes prescribe Prozac as a stop gap, it has a really long half life so you can go alternate days between doses and then three days and so on and it hardly ever causes withdrawals. Some people who have been stuck coming off other SSRIs have been able to come off altogether by swapping to Prozac and then tapering down.

I decreased over a long period of time. But what I'm scared of is not being able to function on SSRIs completely? Has anyone stopped them altogether?

I was on SSRIs for about 10 years, then I stopped altogether and was completely med free for about 8 years and I functioned well. Then I went back on SSRIs, before trying SNRIs and after problems with both of those groups, I'm now on a completely different type of antidepressant. So yes I have come off SSRIs altogether, I'm pretty depressed right now, but I don't have any hangover symptoms of withdrawal from the SSRIs.

I had zoloft withdrawal, it just stopped working for me. And yes I felt non functional, but what really caused me to notice and talk to my doc were the brain zaps. I would get these random jolts of what felt like electricity in my brain. So from my very narrow sample size. I would say look up withdrawal signs for your medication and if you are fitting those then definitely go back to you doc.

I also have adverse reactions to most mood stabilizers so... yay medication roulette!

Sorry, wish it was less difficult for you
