"How the Mind Works" by Steven Pinker. Dept. of Psychology at Harvard. This guy is brilliant. I have watched his lectures. His most famous book is "The Stuff of Thought".

I haven't read his book (yet), but I just happened to be sitting right next to him in a cafeteria at Harvard! That's the Boston version of celebrity citing for you.

As for how the mind works, I thought that Marvin Minsky was really getting somewhere with his book "Society of Mind". It's kind of old now, but available free online I notice.
