Someone posted this in Current Events so I thought I would share it here.

Seems it could be effective in stress related depression. I don't think that is the case with me but reducing long term levels of stress hormones has many benefits. More study is needed as always.

Saffron packs a punch for mental illness

I would like to point out that crocin and crocetin are still chemicals. Naturally occurring chemicals can be toxic or beneficial. Many plants produce natural insecticides and fungicides that are toxic to humans.

Wow, zinco

I love reading up on alternative medicine. I supplement my diet with anti-inflammatories. I also try to incorporate antioxidants in my diet. I hope the pharmaceutical companies stay away if saffron is to become a huge hit for depression!

Thanks for posting this.

pharmaceutical companies can't touch a naturally occurring compound. It can't be patented. Saffron is the most expensive spice on the market at $1500 a pound but the article said it would only cost $30 a month for treatment.

I try to drink a lot of this- (I call it green goo) 47 grams of sugar though.

That is a fantastic find zinco! It's also interestingly consistent with Mark Hyman's view that depression is caused by inflammation. I'm book marking this for sure.

Lots of studies indicate stress and stress hormones at sustained levels cause lots of problems including depression. Not the only cause of depression though

Crocetin is a chemical.

There are many causes of depression. Its very complex. There is no one underlying cause. There are no easy answers.
