It's my birthday today. I woke up early so stayed downstairs because I couldn't sleep. When I came up at 6 my wife complained to me about getting up too early, my 7 year old handed me my presents and cards and then my wife said "well, are you gonna open them, then?!" Wow. Happy birthday to me. So I said no. I don't feel like it. Am I over reacting? She still hasn't even wished me happy birthday. And my presents are still unopened.Birthdays suck.

It's okay not to like birthdays.
That said, I'm worried that you may have inadvertently upset your 7 year old by not opening their gift. Kids get very excited about other people's b-day. Maybe that's why your wife sounded so harsh.
Anyway, hugs for you. I hope things get better for you.

Got to agree with bbb2 we get very stuck with our intense thoughts when depressed. You need to consider your boy in this.

You're both right. I just can't see the wood for the trees sometimes. I hope I didn't upset him

Nothing a sincere apology and a big hug won't fix

I really hope that my post didn't come across as being harsh.

Either way I hope that things are going better.

Happy Birthday

The pressure to have a huge bday social event or something these days is huge. It's totally okay if you didn't find it to be amazing, a lot of people can relate! They definitely feel that way in my family where we have a bday nearly every month! Gets tiring fast. It's also hard sometimes to know how people want us to react or how to convey what we really mean, but that doesn't mean people don't love, care, or think about us. And often times, we show our love in different ways, so it's easy to overlook the effort others put in. They remembered your bday, planned in advance to get you a gift, and got it. That's pretty awesome! Opening it would be a sign of acknowledging and appreciating their effort. If making bdays a bigger celebration important to you. Perhaps you can start that out by planning a bigger one for one the next bday in the family

Thanks guys. It got better. I did over react a bit. But I don't really know how to behave on my birthday if that makes sense. They have been awful for some years now so I just expect the worst each year. And I really shouldn't. It's partially my own fault to be honest
