The last month I have avoided reading news of any kind and I think it helps with depression. I'm sure I will be embarrassed later for not knowing something important that happened, but I feel much better without news.

I have several friends who do the same thing, there is just too much depressing information in the news. It's sad but good news isn't as exciting as bad news.

I also do this. I do subscribe to several on-line news sources. But I only read the headlines... just so I know what happened. I steer clear of any-&-all details. I can't do anything about any of it anyway & it just depresses me. I do also, BTW, subscribe to some on-line science-news information sources. I'm not a scientist myself. But I find hearing about new scientific discoveries to be heartening.

It's also one of Andrew Weil's suggestions for "rejuvenating your spirit" Ten Simple Steps to a Better Life - Dr. Weil I used to do this by accident when I was a graduate student. I was so busy, that I only saw news in magazines that were 1-2 weeks old or more. The news was much more relaxing that way! - vital |

Morning news gets me down, it is never good, there is nothing I can do about it, and I have heard it all before anyway - my wife insists on Radio 4 Today, but I prefer Radio 3, at least I am in my car before bloody Thought for Day...by midday I can handle the news and briefly scan BBC news.

I've been obsessed with news/current events since I was about 12. But it does cause quite a bit of grief for me. I get saddened, annoyed, angered, disgusted. I'll take a week or two off from paying attention to current events every now and then, and I certainly feel just a little bit better for it.

Glad to hear that others feel the same way about news.
I knew the news was depressing me, but I didn't realize how much until I totally stopped reading it. I feel so much better. I read an archaeology news site, but that is all. I avoid science and technology news, because it makes me feel like a dinosaur. ![]() |
