Hello,

At the moment I'm experiencing bouts of depression that only seem to last for 2-3 hours. They seem to come out of nowhere and they hit very very hard. My eyes start to tear up and I'm just overwhelmed with sadness. It can happen at any time, when I'm home alone watching TV or when I'm cuddling with my girlfriend, the situation I'm in really doesn't seem to matter.

I can't figure out why I'm having these emotions. My life is generally fine and when I don't feel depressed I can feel quite happy. I looked into ultra rapid cycling bipolar disorder but I don't think that's it since I don't seem to have periods of mania. I have been depressed in the past for about 6 months straight which was caused by me being addicted to weed and basicly wasting 2 years of my life because of it but that was a long time ago and I have come a long way since.

Please help me out, I just need to get a grasp on what this is. It's killing me that I can't figure it out, I've been having these "episodes" for over a year and I just can't figure it out. At worst I have 1 or 2 every day but there's been weeks where I didn't have an episode at all.

Thanks in advance,

Comstible

the best way to figure out what is going on is to see a professional. this could be an marriage and family therapist, an lcsw or a phd. just make sure when you call them up that you ask them if they specialize in depression. anybody can treat it and does, but it is best treated by someone who does it regularly and is well versed in what is going on. i am sorry you are struggling. take care

I'm not sure about the episodes, but congratulations on breaking out of your weed addiction and depression! How did you manage that?

One day I just decided I had to quit and go do something with my life. I started studying and it went great. I felt depressed in the start but eventually through hard work and staying positive I turned my emotions around.

I've recently been to a professional regarding some health anxiety problems I've had and we've discussed these episodes but he wasn't sure about what it was. He wasn't specialized in depression though.

I have no idea of your current or past diagnosis', but sometimes personality disorders can cause episodes similar to what you describe - depressive episodes lasting from a few minutes to a few hours - especially borderline personality disorder. Maybe something to look at and see if any of the other symptoms fit? Maybe something to discuss with a therapist or physician?

Hey, thanks for your reply. While I do have the crazy mood swings and intense periods of anxiety and depression that seem to accompany borderline personality disorder I don't have any of the other symptoms. Therefor I feel like it's very unlikely that I'm suffering from it.

do you have any other symptoms that might relate to bipolar disorder e.g. extreme mood swings?

i think it would be beneficial for you to see a doctor as well and get a diagnosis. this could be a hormonal problem.

Well my mood swings from feeling fine/neutral to feeling depressed and back again. I don't seem to have the episodes of mania that accompanies a bipolar disorder though sometimes I can get a bit irritable but it's never that extreme and doesn't seem to last a long time.

What meds are you on? I wonder if it could be related to the duration of action of medication.

ADHD, thyroid disease, epilepsy, parkinson's, hypoglycemia, lack of sleep, use of illicit drugs and/or alcohol, hormones and pregnancy, head injury, brain tumors etc can also cause rapid mood swings, I don't know if any of these apply. I hope you find some answers soon.
