Hey guys,

I've been battling depression for a few years now and I can't tell when I'm actually happy about something or whether I've just got good at faking happiness for others sake?

Just wondered if anyone else is like this or if there is a way to figure out what it is?

Thanks!

I don't have any words of advice, but I feel the same way. I don't know how to feel happiness anymore, or if I am, I have a hard time believing it is real.

Sometimes you fake happiness or keep smiling when it in reality its not that funny or entertaining, just for the sake of not disappointing the other person. You feel as if you are scared of disappointing another, this is nature of a selfless human being.

You could try not giving a **** at all and see what happens. Its like holding your frame and observing what happens. Maybe it will lead you to true happiness.

I don't feel like I actually am happy ever anymore. I think I pretend to be for the sake of others a lot, but I don't really even now what real happiness feels like anymore. Sorry, I don't know how to tell the difference between the two.

I can't tell when I'm actually happy about something or whether I've just got good at faking happiness for others sake? - I am pretty sure you would recognise true happiness. Are other people truly convinced you are happy when you are faking it - I would guess 'not entirely'?

When the laugh is real -I feel it. Being happy and being content??? Not sure anyone is really happy all the time. There are times I have to pretend at the job when I work with people - sometimes that is so draining and other times it is good - very real.

I can tell when I'm really happy and just faking it, I fake it usually when I don't want to disappoint someone or if I want to seem approachable. This is usually when I'm in a crowd, I'm genuinely happy around pets, or with 1 or 2 people I really like.

Real life is a bit like acting to me, I'm just playing a role I don't like.
