I seem to feel better when I'm in antibiotics. A month later I feel sick all the time and my mood worsens. Anyone else the same?
Or getting sick after you've been horribly upset? |

I don't know about bacterial or viral infections, but I've heard rumors that stress can lower your immune response... so maybe? I'll let someone more qualified answer that one.

I'm not sure I understand how you're using the term "chronic illness" here. Do you have chronic health problems? (I looked at your profile but didn't see any noted.)

There is a lot of recent work with gut bacteria problems being related to depression and other mental issues. See, for instance, for an explanation. ![]() |

i feel like my resistance to getting sick is lower for sure. after a visit from my parents and all the accompanying stress i had backache, runny nose, stomach problems. i am still getting over it. i think there is a correlation between a sick mind and a sick body. maybe nothing that is very noticeable at first, but after dealing with depression for many years i have noticed i am not as healthy as i once was.

Lowered immune system, constant coughs and colds, etc. recently had a tonsillectomy. Psychiatrist was saying when there's inflammation in the body, also inflammation in the brain which in turn lowers mood.

And your primary has ruled out any other physical illness that can weaken an immune system?
It's really the chicken \egg discussion, to be perfectly honest. |

I don't entirely understand the question either. Unfortunately for most of us here Depression is a chronic illness. For some they had an episode and got better and it did not return. ...no surprise there ... Sure, when I am doing well with the depression under control and I get influenza I can get symptoms of depression ... no surprise there. ... Re the gut bacteria its not a new idea. I started reading about that from about 2008. It has been discussed/linked to many problems including obesity. Gut bacteria plays some kind of role in health including mental health ... no real surprise there either ...

Found this. I have MS, I have Depression. At least, from this way of being mindful of the link between stress/bacterial inflammation/depression and trying to keep myself as well as possible, I can watch my emotional health for indicators of an MS relapse, which I do. Just didn't think my stomach and central nervous system were as deeply connected. Then again eastern views on health focus on the core. |

Not at all. It was a general comment towards those making ill informed comments about the origins of depression. A statement to society in general.
