I thought this was interesting. It is often repeated by some that antidepressants do not beat placebo by much. I have always doubted the truth of that and I am glad that psychotropic medications are available for me.

It is very interesting. While some meds may not be much more effective than placebo, its my thought that these drugs arent meant to be a cure all. Just an aid. Beating MI isnt just about medications, its about coping, therapy, and many other things. I am glad that all the media distortion is being mentioned here because there are meds that truly do work for their purpose

Absolutely. The information coming from the media is of a poor standard I think. There is a lot of opinion and misinformation. A lot of people that have formed a belief before looking at the evidence. There is also money in mental health just as there is in any other field. There are big companies making money out of medications for sure but there are also people selling all kinds of products and services. For example, supplements are a massive industry. There are seminars which people pay money for and then there are books such as this one:

Ho hum, this is one of those cases where if you search the internet long enough you can find 'information' to support any point of view you care to bring forward: A bitter pill | Society | The Guardian

If they make you feel better that is enough I suppose.

The purpose of the thread was to get members to look a bit closer at the quality of the information coming from the media. The links I provided were articles/reviews provided by experts in this field of information which is basically just popular media. The book is not a piece of academic work; it is a book designed to sell. Your link to a media article proves that exact point. It was not about finding support for a particular position. If you want to form an informed view my friend you would go to the primary research itself and then be guided by that and your own experience. Don't take somebody's word for it - especially not a journalist. And so according to the point I was making you would NOT take the word of The Guardian.

The research speaks for itself. So that leaves my experience. I have been around the block way too many times to be fooled by placebo. I find it quite ridiculous that I could trick myself with a sugar pill whilst in the grips of a suicidal depression. My position is that members here should find out for themselves by a)looking at the evidence and b)trying to find what works for you
