These are the 3 worst things I have heard whilst depressed.

1. You just need to be positive!
2. Do yoga and meditation you will feel much better
3. Life is what YOU make it!

What are your 3 worst?

Hi Lonely and sad
1. Snap out of it
2. You don't know when you're well-off
3. You are just stupid and useless.

Things typically said by those mentally when people who understand absolutely nothing about depression because they have never experienced it. Take care. I hope and pray you have a really great day. God bless and best wishes from your friend Francis

1. "This started when you quit believing in god." (I never believed in god.)
2. "I have PTSD. What's your excuse?"
3. "Why can't he understand that I don't want to be around him when he's depressed?" (Said to me about someone else, talking about their boyfriend)

"I don't think talking about it is going to make it any better"
"Think positively"
"Have you had enough water to drink today?" (Seriously). Look, I know water is good for you but if hydration were the cure for mental illness I think CNN would have announced that by now. (throws hands up, walks away shaking head)

Have you prayed about It?

Remember that this will pass unless you dwell on it.

You will find darkness if you keep looking for it.

"Stay positive" (being positive never helped me...in fact, that made things worse! Staying neutral about everything was what helped me)

"God will help you" (...I guess I never told you that I was atheist, huh? I could've sworn that I at least implied it. Either way, that didn't help when I was Baptist, why would that help me now?)

"Maybe you should just ignore it and it will go away" (Can that work for a bad grade on a math test too? Because I'd love to see that)

...Gee, thanks, that advice was about as helpful as a kick to the face

I know how you feel, I've been sad too (I am not sad, I am depressed. Sometimes I am sad because, well, I am a human being. But sadness is a normal and healthy reaction to upsetting events. Depression does not need something to cause it. This is the equivalent to comparing being out of breath from running to being out of breath because you have asthma...)
Is it because you're unemployed (no, but that, sure as ****, ain't helpin'!)
Have you tried yoga/meditation/speaking to god/etc. (You know, pretending I believe in something is not going to help. Why not ask me to try believing in magical fairies who will lift away my depression like bees lift pollen or realigning my chakras (which, for the record, don't exist) or cutting a deal with Baron Samedi with some rum and candies (voodoo, in case you were wondering))
Thanks for this!

Why don't you start volunteering? (When I barely have the energy to get out of bed and take a shower, never mind anything else.)

You should stop taking all of those pills (By people that self-medicate with alcohol and weed, and God knows what else.)

Everyone is depressed. You should start exercising.
Thanks for this!

Man, I cannot believe I missed the ever popular "get more exercise" trope

It is hard to exercise when it feels like you are in a gravity field several times that of Earth's

And the aches and pains that you know have no basis in reality (after some annoying and intrusive tests) other than your brain hates you and wants you to suffer

People that aren't depressed are insensitive to those that are, I feel. I've read the replies prior to this one and I was cracking up. Not that I should be but because I've heard them before and at least you guys are sharing them trying to have a sense of humor about it. Here's the ones that just bother me when I hear them, mostly because they come from people closest to me... who should know better!

1 - Just snap out of it! (If only)

2 - Invision yourself wrapped in a pink light of positivity and don't have any negative thoughts

3 - Go out and exercise or do something you love to do, like a hobbie! (do you hear yourself? Have you read ANYTHING about depression?)

I could go on, but you all touched on so many, it really did give me a good giggle...

They don't get it, do they? We try so hard to not show it and then we're exhausted. We come to the point where we just can't do it any more and they wonder why we are the way we are?

I just had to add more:

"At least it isn't cancer!" (said to me a while back by a family doctor)
" Why don't you try to cut out gluten? I did it and now I feel so much better." (Said to me by my T. WTF?)
"Other people have it worse off than you do."
Hugs from:

Hi.Lonely

That is actually what I do depressed or not just make myself get on with it. No matter how I feel, while at the same time using my therapy tools to improve health which eventually does happen. You do well. Doing this because it is very difficult to do. Take care. God bless and best wishes from your friend Francis

bless you for this. Especially the part about Earth's gravity. It's sadly true but made me laugh anyway.

I think of any food "fad" over the past 15 years - this "gluten-free" thing boils my butt the most. If gluten were such the all-powerful, all-consuming, demon spawn of HELL it's made out to be....how come the human race has been around this long? Wouldn't it have wiped all our sorry azzez off the globe long ago if it were "killing" us?

Pink? Why bloody pink? I always heard white light was the healing light? Maybe you love pink and they know that?

People should stick to the "If I don't know much about it I should keep my yap shut" dictum.

The only postitive thing I've read about gluten-free is for children with autism. It seems to help them a whole lot. However, so does THC...
