My wife is four months pregnant and horribly depressed. She thinks about killing herself all the time. She is a mental health professional, so she knows all about that world and does not think any of those resources can help her. She has been in therapy and on medication and does not want to do any of that anymore. She does not want to go to the hospital. She does not want to be threatened or forced to do anything. I don't know what to do to help her.

Hi David,

I don't know what pregnancy does to a depressed person (I gather that your wife was depressed before also). The first thing I would look at is to check for any medical or nutritional issues with her M.D. This blog entry might help

6 Strategies to Eliminate Depression - Dr. Mark Hyman

You might get some ideas from this plan

or these notes

Just because someone has credentials does not mean the very thing they help people with does not make them suffer as well. I know people get burn out working in this field. Have you taken your wife camping or hiking in nature? Just nature, get away from it all and go swimming in the lakes, streams. Collect wild berries, walk a trail, take photos of each other in the forrest. You will recharge your batteries by reconnecting with nature, provided none of you are physically disabled. Blessings.

I was a health care professional until retiring on health grounds, sometimes this knowledge helps us care for ourselves but sometimes stops us, especially when we know the shortcomings of the system. This is worse when judgement is impaired due to what is wrong with us. I'm sorry I have no answers, things may be taken out of your hands eventually, though I hope not, for the right reason. It's most important that you look after yourself while she won't let you look after her so you are better able when she will.
I really feel for you in your situation!
