Very often a depressed person may be told "come on! shake yourself! jump into the crowd!"

I may tell you that is a stupid idea. I these days I am living the 3rd bad depressive bout of my life, and I have to get a lot of things done anyway. Well, it DOES NOT MAKE ME FEEL BETTER AT ALL!!!

Thesea re the kind of bulls##t you can hear from those who did not understand that DEPRESSION IS AN ILLNESS. What if you have a flu and must work anyway? You work but that doesn't surely help with your flu. You're always sick and suffering all the time.

Ah, damn. Now the day is over and I feel enough energy to get angry. But tomorrow I will wake up as a shivering pityful thing. No doubt.
Today I didn't cry, as I had done in the past 2 days, but that is just because I can't get enough privacy. This time I'll score a record, I know. I've been depressed for 25 days and it is wearing me off.

God damn the day that I was born! Depressed and have to squeeze!

Hi there,
I'm kinda new here... I suffer from depression (alittle over 4 years) and have had my mother tell me to snap out of it when i get upset "for no reason" or cry...well you might be able to snap your fingers, but when your suffering from something...it isn't easy to overcome contrary to what others believe. If you need an ear, or a hand... *waves*

Stefano,
I totally get how people give you a ''Push'' to go and do things that you ,when depressed, are totally not into.Sometimes you just cant because you need time to take care of yourself. Then to make matters worse you feel guilty for not going or doing the activity.
However, you might try to do something to get out as "retreating" or "hiding" at home kinda defeats the attempt to get better.Sometimes, even when you force yourself to go,it turns out to be not so bad after all.
Take care

Sometimes I wonder how much doctors actually realize how it feels.. they say the best thing to do is go out and be active, but it's a huge struggle to even get out of bed, nevermind be active.. and once you do get out, you just wanna get home again. It's such a horrible cycle.

Too many doctors are informed about depression (and other mental illnesses) less than me and you.
I'm telling you, if I knew that doing something that I doon't feel like doing would HEAL depression... I would jump readily into fire. I'm sure you would too. I would gladly chop my arm off. The problem is that I may LOOK not depressed for a while, but actually suffering intrenally, and then just be as depressed as before. Possibly even more.
One should only accept opinions from experienced psychiatrists.
