had a visit from my social worker today, she thinks she is helping me, by trying to get me involved in a drop in center and outdoor activitys .......... im not an out going person, im scared of meeting people.........
before i was ill i didnt mix with others very well, and now she is pushing me into something im scared of..... why cant she see....
at the moment im getting by, im struggling but im happy-ish.
do i have the right to say............" NO........... i dont want to do it".

You always have the right to say no. Its your life.
But remember you are a good person and kind and brave and caring! They maybe as scared as you!

I don't particularly care for people in general. Maybe (like you) I'm scared of them...I know I have become more and more isolated as the years have gone by.

can you say NO ...absolutely BUT that does not mean that it will be the end. I'm only talking from personal experience but even though you have the right to say no....they have the right to keep nagging..."it will be good for you"..."you shouldn't isolate yourself like this"...yada, yada, yada.....

and I still keep saying no with a smile on my face.

Hey Dec, I'm scared of meeting new people too. But so are lots of people, more than you'd think! I'm guessing that many of the people who go to the drop in centre would be scared too. Maybe give it a try and just go once...... a bit like taking things one hour or a minute at a time on really bad days?

But you certainly do have the right to say No, that you don't want to do what she suggests. You may need to be prepared for a possible negative response from her though (could be wrong!)

I think you should take part to the outdor activities. Not because the social worker says so, but because it is good.
When I was a teen (are you young?) I was quite secretive and lonely. I would tell to myself that I was just the solitary type, that there was no need to challenge my fears. Now I'm 36 and I'm paying the price (a HIGH one, believe me). No one can live alone.
Go! Do it! Before it's too late.

The best of luck

i dont normaly respond to trm posts, i was here this morning when this bubbly lady comes in asking how he is, hardly glances at me i tried to make myself scarce by doing housework, but the weather was bad so i couldnt go out
trm is is 34
i only heard snippets of conversation so i only now what trm has told me but i got the inpression that she is pushing a lot of information in this one meeting because she wont see him for another 3 weeks, and there wasnt a lot of what do you like or what did you do before you became ill its this will be good for you, maybe if she got to know trm like you all do she might understand him better, she even tried to say amercan mental health sites are not good, he explained that this site is not like what she was saying
sorry had to put my two pence worth in

I've had mental health workers just like you described.....over worked (scheduled), undered paid, mean well but haven't a clue and can't take the time to find out.

Don't you just love when it comes together in one package and you are on the receiving end.

Give trm a big hug for me.
