hi all! i have a question that google was totally useless for and i was hoping maybe you guys would know. is it normal to have distinct episodes of depression? ~3 weeks ago i had every classic symptom of depression, to the point of being more than a little suicidal. then it's like a switch flipped last week and i feel totally normal? (this is just an example, this has happened a few times over the past few years) based on the past, i have anywhere from 1-4 weeks before depression strikes again. is your depression segmented like this or is it generally continuous? thanks for reading xx

Well, it could be totally normal. Many people have "episodes" or periodic times of depression that recurs. How is your sleep? Getting enough? That could cause mood swings but so could other things. If you felt suicidal, then flipped, as you say, to feeling totally normal, what does normal feel like to you? I've read enough here on the forums to wonder if you could have bipolar, but we aren't able to help you figure out if you are. You should be seeing a doctor for advice, being suicidal, even just thinking of it at times in your life, deserves some professional intervention. Best wishes, and a warm welcome to this site!
Thanks for this!

Thanks for your reply!! i just started seeing a psych this month but we havent discussed diagnoses yet and my anxiety is killing me!! at my intake session they briefly mentioned possibly taking a bipolar evaluation, but i havent heard anything else about it. i thought it was just because of family history (mom + brother both bipolar) but lately i cant stop worrying about it im just really nervous to ask my therapist about it but i guess i probably need to.. sorry for the overkill reply lol it felt good to get it out. but thanks again!!!

It is generally continuous, chronic for me. I know others that have reported changes, sometimes sudden, the way you have described.
Thanks for this!
