I got told that I am playing victim and I'm really offended. I got told other mean things. I look up "playing victim" and all I see "people who play victim are trying to manipulate others"

I don't think I am trying to manipulate but geez i was so pissed at hearing that.

That's a horrible thing to say!

YOU know that you're not trying to be manipulative, therefore YOU know that their accusation is UNTRUE.

one thing in life is guaranteed, we will be misunderstood and people will have unhelpful opinions about us!

I hope you're can hold on to what you know to be the truth.

I think that expression is so overused that it has very little meaning. Most people just repeat it unconsciously. It's pop psychology, an attempt to reduce something complex to a simple concept.

When people talk derisively of a "victim mentality" I think they're referring to someone who (in their opinion) is falsely claiming being badly done to, in order to get some reward. imo a REAL "victim mentality" is inadvertent masochism and defensiveness following some kind of authentic trauma, which is NOT going to get better by deriding or attacking the person!!! A genuinely fearful and self critical person is just going to absorb any further unwarranted criticism as if it were true.

I really hate when people throw around terms like "playing the victim" and I'm sorry it happened to you.

I guess thts d thing with laypersons. They seem unwilling or even unable to deal with others psychological pain or discomfort even if they are directly or indirectly responsible. Them denying you your feelings might even be a way of them shielding themselves from certain discomfort if they allow themselves to "see" and acknowledge that they are in fact responsible for the suffering of another. No one likes dealing with unpleasant "intrusive" feelings. I've been where you are countless times and all we want is recognition that we have indeed been wronged, and most probably don't deserve it. This also ties in with possible gaslighting as a manipulative tactic in the case if you're dealing with a narcissistic personality. Remember, to thine own self be true.
