Last week someone was asking about parenting and depression and the challenges parents face. This article talks about tips to help parents who are also trying to cope with mental illness
Tips for Parenting with a Mental Illness | Psych Central
Quote:
Parenting is a difficult job and a juggling act no matter what. It requires balancing your own needs with those of your child. It involves managing your time, having adequate resources and supporting your child.

For parents coping with a mental illness, “these issues are amplified,” said Ryan Howes, Ph.D, psychologist, writer and professor in Pasadena, Calif.
See what tips are available to parents or understand the challenges your parents may have been going through when you were a child. Depression Support Chat is at 9PM EDT on Thursday night. Hope to see you there.

My parents have passed on. As far as I can remember it seemed like they were never crazy about parenting. I found out some time later after they had passed away that they planned on not having children when they got married. When my Mom was pregnant with my sister (the first) my father was very distraught, I heard. And then three followed after my sister; all unplanned.

My father complained a lot about having kids. He used to say that kids were a heavy burden. I think that he had depression along with anxiety. I think that it got passed down to me and my sister and two brothers. My grandfather and great-grandfather were supposed to have it also.

I never got married. But I had wanted to get married and I was hoping to meet a woman who felt the same as I did - never wanting to have kids. So I guess my father influenced me on not wanting to have kids for myself.

Sorry will. This must have been quite a load you have had to carry this around with you. Many times the traits of our parents are instilled in us as kids but many people find ways to over come these tendencies and be the person they are beneath the human layers our parents apply to help us live in the world.
