There are so many arguments about nurture or nature. But a study just published in Nature has identified a clear genetic link with some types of major depression Identification of 15 genetic loci associated with risk of major depression in individuals of European descent : Nature Genetics : Nature Research. I only came across it because I've used the same testing company, 23andme, to do some family tree research, and find out my origins.
It's interesting that this is one of the first successes of 'Big Data' https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_data and if precision medicine ever takes off https://www.nih.gov/precision-medici...cohort-program we could even see customised meds for people that will definitely work. A lot needs to happen before that's a reality, but the pace of change is fast. Some people say personalised medicine won't work because it isn't scaleable, but it's already being used in oncology. Anyway, although I have GAD and depression, and been signed off work in the past, I've never had major depression so bad I couldn't function. But I've read a lot of people's posts on this forum and thought I'd post this to give you some hope for a future solution. ![]() ![]() |
