Just saw my pdoc today and he wants me to get a second opinion. But the second opinion he wants me to get involved an inpatient stay that could last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks depending on what insurance will pay.

I am really not sure I want to go into the hospital again. I was there 4 times last year.

What should I do? There is a wait list for the program so it could take a month or so to get in. Second opinion

Without giving details, what is the nature of the second opinion? I could see recommending a hospital stay as an alternative course of treatment but I would think a second opinion usually means one session talking to someone else to see if their diagnosis matches?

How are you doing?

They do have a one time consult that you can do but my pdoc prefers the inpatient option. Inpatient has pdocs, social workers, occupational therapist and nurses. Supposed to be more comprehensive and they run more tests and stuff.

My pdoc didn't really say what he was looking for and I forgot to ask. But he said it was a good option for people who have treatment resistant depression.

Well apparently my depression is back and anxiety is through the roof. But things feel different this time around. I can't quite put my finger on it.

I don't know what this inpatient opinion entails but it sounds like it may be a good option if you trust your pdoc's recommendation.

Well I talked to my pdoc again. I was able to ask him why he was making this recommendation and why he wanted to do inpatient. So he said it was because of all the med struggles I have been having and that they can do more inpatient. So I told him to go ahead and start the paperwork since it could take over a month to get a spot. But there is also the chance insurance could deny it or the program could say I am not a candidate for inpatient. I still have time to change my mind too.

I really like my pdoc. He is very accessible and doesn't rush you. I have been with him for about 9 years so I do trust him.

This sounds like a good idea for all of the reasons you posted. Good luck and keep us posted.

I also think it's a good idea. Keep us informed, please! As a bipolar with lots of hospital stays, I understand your feelings.

This may not be an option, but you may be able to find an intensive outpatient program-- where you actually go 4-5 times a week, but sleep at home. It may be a bit cheaper but give you access to the comprehensive care -- such as social workers and occupational therapists etc.
