I haven't been here in several years but in that time my depression has stayed a steady companion and I have picked up a chronic illness. I am struggling with something I think someone else must be dealing with, as well.
I am mostly home bound from my medical problems, even though I am 34 y/o and I cannot work.

I feel my life has zero purpose. I have tried to do somethings from home but was unable to keep them up or they were inconsequential.

How do you deal with feeling your life has no purpose or meaning, if you feel that way?

I suspect chronic depression has greatly diminished my capacity for assessing my life's meaning. A proper assessment of my life's meaning may not be possible until my story has ended.

At present, my living at least serves to justify the expenditure of Other People's Money.

Is it possible - has any doctor suggested - that depression was the early, first presentation of the chronic illness?

Honestly, being home bound myself; I come on here to see if I can help someone out. I make sure my fiance knows I love him and knows that I'll support him and be here for him forever. I let people on here and others in my life know that I'll always be here and they'll always have a safe place to talk or just sit. I don't have much of a purpose, but if I can help one person out of a hundred, then I did something with my life. It's all I have to offer anymore, so that's what I do. The same goes here, you need to talk, you know where to find me.

Hi, no doctor has suggested that my depression was the early first presentation of my chronic illness. It's a rare sort of illness.

That's the kind of purpose I would like. I want to help people. I was in a "helping" field before I got stuck at home.

I come here when I get overwhelmed and have not one to express my feeling. You are helping us every day. Thank you, Só leigheas.

Just being here for others is a perfectly valid "use" for you. It the risk of getting all biblical on you...i remember something that goes like... "consider the lilies of the field, they neither reep nor sow, yet god paints them in all their glory."

I had never considered that verse in that way. Or maybe I just skimmed over it too quickly without much contemplation, but you are right.

I want to be here for others...maybe that's a role I can slowly take on. I fear being overbearing.

Thank you, Shazerac.

Helping others is a pretty good way to fight that feeling, I believe - different methods for different people. In any case, you exist and you're breathing - you deserve happiness just for that.

Well I am 47 , I have more than my share of chronic illness ( not kidding I hit the mother lode ) I spend a majority of my time at home , in the summer I get out but winter and wheelchairs don't get along to well , best to keep them separated. Depression can cause both the feeling of isolation as well as enforce it unless you actively fight it. You have to believe you are worth it! Because you are .
