Hi all,
I suffer from depression but I am not seeing a psychiatrist because I do not have the financial means to pay for it. I have not worked in a few years due to my depression (and anxiety). Do you know of some type of clinic or government program that will enable me to receive psychiatric help?

Thanks for this!

Perhaps a crisis hotline can point you to free resources in your area?
Thanks for this!

No I haven't because all the hospitals in my area are private ones, so I don't think they can be of much help in my situation. The only public hospital is about 30 miles away.

I don't know if you currently have insurance but I recommend Medicaid. If you already have it, then call the number on the back of your insurance card and they give you counselors and therapist that take your insurance.

If you live in an area with a decent population there are probably clinics that cater to low income and homeless. They usually have the word community in their name.

They will be very plugged into the community and will be able to help you or point you in the right direction. I went to one and they got me qualified for medicaid because I thought I didn't qualify when I did.

In the area where I live Catholic Charities has free counseling. My daughter made use of it for a time, we aren't Catholic and they don't push religion or anything like that if that is a concern.

Thank you, I made an appointment at a community clinic, but I don't know if the first visit will involve a charge or not. I hope not, as I cannot afford to pay.
