I know enough that numbing painful feelings also prevents positive feelings from showing up. And that's the problem these days with the epidemic of alcoholism, drug addiction, and other addictions.

I don't use drugs or alcohol ever but tonight I'm feeling the urge to get some wine and get slightly drunk. My fantasy is that the alcohol will numb the painful feelings of emptiness and loneliness and...

Has anyone ever used alcohol as a temporary numbing solution to the pain? Will it work?

My rational brain knows it's a stupid idea but I'm looking for some quick relief -just for tonight.

Hello, skysblue. You might be better off doing some mindfulness meditation.

I have used alcohol in the past to numb myself. It's only a temporary solution, and I now believe its a stupid solution, but that is my choice to abstain. Best wishes to you.

I have used alcohol before...my pdoc knows. I use it sparingly and it does make me feel better short term. Best wishes.

I stay away from alcohol when my depression gets bad. That's because I know how it effects me. When my mood is ok it makes me happy, but if I'm troubled it will make things worse.

I just ask if you do, please do so with care.

Take care of yourself

I was able to resist. Like I said, I don't drink so I would have had to go to the store and buy some. I don't like alcohol at all so there would have been no pleasure in the taste. It would have been like taking a foul tasting medicine.

I knew it was a bad idea anyway. Thanks for your feedback. It helped me get through the evening. I'm o.k. today - a mellow sad instead of an excruciating sad.

Glad to hear you're feeling better and decided alcohol is not the answer for you. If you are not very careful, you could become an addict which only makes things worse. Kudos to you.

I'm one of those people who never drink. I last tried alcohol in college. I am not even a social drinker. So, you can imagine how desperate I was feeling last night.
