We've all lost count of the number of times we've seen someone post about unhelpful or even harmful things said by friends, family, co-workers, etc. And yet there are articles out there pointing out the more common misconceptions and flaws. So I thought I'd start a thread where we could put up links to stuff we could point people to.
I know some people won't believe it or bother to read it, but you can try. To that end, I'd suggest not including books, anything lengthly, or anything that isn't freely available. Anyways, a quick search didn't turn up quite what I'd hoped for. Oddly enough, what seemed most comprehensive and helpful while still not being too much to read was the trio of links below to the Reader's Digest site. I'm somewhat concerned that Reader's Digest may not be considered particularly authoritative by a lot of people. And the website can be a little annoying. I was a little surprised not to turn up much of anything from the obvious professional associations. Many were rather perfunctory. https://www.rd.com/health/wellness/t...th-depression/ https://www.rd.com/health/conditions/depression-facts/ https://www.rd.com/health/conditions...th-depression/ http://health.usnews.com/health-care...to-say-instead https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog...whos-depressed Please add any other material you found useful or promising. Obviously, some people are going to identify with and like some articles more than others, but I'm hoping we can put together a list for people to pick from. |

But a few people are willing to consider it, so I'm hoping it's still a useful exercise. |

People say these things because they are not themselves worth the benefits of the doubt from anyone. It is just best to ignore them because they don't have the maturity to change themselves,
Some people though, find it hard to discard their words and move on from it. They suffer from depression and anxiety. Just remember that life is to live for you and not to please others if they call you by names that just show their low standers and not affect you in any other way. Find some inspiration in life, there are many successful people who have been told like that they are useless but now they get appreciated by the world. |

QueenOfStars, thanks for the supportive words.
However, the original post was intended for dealing with people who are trying to help, but don't always "get it". This sort of thing is intended to help those in a support role who may sometimes have trouble wrapping their head around some of the mindsets of a depressed person. At least, that's what I was aiming for. |
