It has been said that suicide is “selfish” and that Depression, in some cases, can make people “Selfish”

I disagree... everyone I know personally who battles the Beast of Depression is NOT “selfish”

No doubt I “deserved” all the condemnation from those who called me “selfish” when younger.

Everywhere I go I piss at least one person off, and they are so sure to tell me ... in the meanest way possible.

Suicide is not selfish at all. Neither is depression. When people say that it really makes me angry. As if it isn't hard enough living through depression without people's nasty opinions.

You deserved no such thing. Those people are mean, nasty, jerks. Remember their behaviour is a reflection of them and not you.

No neither is selfish. In fact, in some cultures, suicide is considered as an act of self determination and self knowledge (i.e., Japanese). Those people who call you selfish probably has very little knowledge about depression and/or mental health.

I don't see how it is selfish if it is not selfish for people to want someone to continue suffering. I think with you gone this board and the world would be a much worse place. Boil that down and is that not selfish of me? Maybe it is because people are so uncomfortable with both death and MH?

I know this is off-topic a little but I was thinking the other day about my state's assisted suicide law and how people with mental illness are all but excluded yet somehow people in severe chronic pain are not judged 'out of their mind'?

*ahem*...I'm probably going to recieve a lot of backlash for this, but as a survivor of a family member who did indeed commit suicide, I found it incredibly selfish of them to have done so and left his family in shambles.

His wife...

Possible trigger:

was the one who had to endure the ordeal of discovering his body

If he truly loved her, he wouldn't have put his wife through that.

He wasn't there when his daughter walked down the isle (her brother who has down syndrome did so).

And speaking of my cousin with down sydrome. How do you tell a young man with less than the average IQ, who you don't even know can comprehend the totality of death, what exactly happened and know if he can comprehend it all?

Selfish indeed to make your mentally impaired son go through that.

My uncle should never have stopped taking his pills if he actually had an ounce of love and compassion in his body for his family. No, all he could think about was himself. He couldn't see past his short sighted nose to what really mattered.

I'm not going to flogg you. I will simply state that I whole heartedly disagree with you, as someone who has attempted suicide. I will also suggest that this comment wasn't needed on this thread. People on the depression board in particular need support, which this isn't.

I'm sorry my ranting about my uncle isn't viewed as supportive, but people aught to consider that there might be a whole bunch of people who they leave confused, sad and angry when they choose to willingly leave this mortal coil before their natural time. If anything, I'm a victim, a victim of a suicide.

Now, I shall take my leave of this thread before I cause any further distress. Know that I wasn't meaning to cause further pain to anyone on here, just trying to open their eyes a bit. I know from first hand experience how hard that is when you're bogged down in emotions, but it is possible. I am living proof.

I wouldn’t say you’ll get back lash from this bec I feel this is an honest post about Anger. Which can be understandable. All those things that were mentioned had to be dealt with. It’s a massive strain on the humans left behind. Very true.

I too lost a nephew last yr to suicide. He was 28 & had a dd that is 3yrs old.
But my reaction to the entire thing was totally different than yours. Many in my family had your reaction.....I had to keep my mouth closed.

I feel if someone says suicide is selfish, their thinking of themselves obviously & yeah I guess that is selfish.
Many do not consider the absolute courage it would take to relieve themselves of their own demons & how miserable they must’ve felt to take this path. How much agony & pain they were in. No I wouldn’t say selfish of them at all.

And I feel some say depression is selfish bec we turn ourselves inward to cope. By doing this we’re actually trying to help ourselves by keeping others away. Don’t we do that when we have the flu? Isolate them?
I don’t mean to argue & I do know I have very different views on this.
Just how I feel.
