Did it take a lot of study to become a doctor?

I would imagine it takes a lot of time for most people...

in the usa you have to do undergraduate school---say 3-4 years..
and then 4 years of medical school....
then you take a state medical test to have a license...
if you pass you are a licensed md...ready for internship...

most people have to work pretty hard to finish...

Ideas, yes; real knowledge, not so much.

Circumstances have compelled me to delve into some nutritional topics. I've only relatively recently come across "time-restricted eating," or "time-restricted feeding," and the related "intermittent fasting."

Few dispute the rising prevalence of insulin resistance in modern diets all over the world. As insulin resistance can lead to all kinds of problems (including depression?), people have looked into various means of restoring the body's insulin sensitivity.

The continuous, chronic elevation of glucose in the blood and resulting chronically elevated insulin levels probably (?) lead to the "downregulation" of those metabolic pathways allowing the body to use stored fat rather than glucose for fuel. Fat burning does/may (?) have benefits beyond weight control.

Time-restricted feeding and intermittent fasting are among many proposed methods for more effective restoration of insulin sensitivity.

An amazing amount of controversy surrounds these topics.

Little Turtle, you mentioned a conversation between a diabetes specialist and a neurologist. With reference to neurology, fasting can stimulate a process of "neuronal autophagy" where the cells "recycle" bad bits of themselves (especially proteins). That's a salutary, therapeutic process provided the fast continues long enough but not too long.

???

Eventually these paths return me to the question of what can I reasonably do to make the ground of my life less fertile for depression and anxiety. I'm still searching.

I approach all these subjects with uncertainty.

Forgiveness: Though I do not wish to diminish the psychic value of genuine interpersonal forgiveness, I tend to prefer the approach of those therapists who do not demand it of their patients. My observation is forced forgiveness is not forgiveness. Unless it grows and ripens "naturally," forgiveness will not provide its advertised benefits. We might be able to nurture true forgiveness through developing an understanding of those who have injured us, but in the real world understanding does not always lead to forgiveness.

"How much sugar can we eat without going blind?" Reading this the first thing that comes to mind is diabetic retinopathy. Of course, the potential illnesses associated with insulin resistance and chronic hyperinsulinemia are many. The short answer is "I have no idea."

Various sources I've seen, however, would caution against a narrow focus on sugar. If the main culprit is a chronic state of elevated insulin, then all foods - including "healthy foods" - that easily break down into glucose or glucose+fructose need to be taken into consideration.

Regarding sugar and depression, ... As much as I have attempted to separate the wheat from the chaff, relying primarily on peer-reviewed literature, I suspect just about everyone, including those in the white coats, has some sort of agenda. Some solid information exists, but it all seems surrounded by institutional "scaffolding."

Question everything, and don't ignore your own experience.
