Where does anyone find the drive, the motivation, the whatever you call it to just get things done? I feel like I'm so far behind on everything in my life. My work, my school work, my career. I procrastinate, I know what I should be doing and when I should be doing it but I just don't do it. I want to be motivated and focused and get caught up with everything and on with my life. Where do I find this mythical power? I'm tired of putting everything off until it all just snowballs on me, and then I get so stressed out I can't cope with it.

HI Distracted_Seph. Welcome to Psych Central. Sorry to hear you are having trouble getting motivated. There are many things we can do to get the energy flowing in our lives but each person is different. One thing that is common to us all is we have this talent of focusing our attention and our awareness, but often we have fallen into habits of inattention and drifting in a field of thoughts.

Mindfulness is reclaiming our native talent to choose what we focus on. It is a beginning to show us how we need to start moment to moment focusing on what helps us and not hurts us. This set of free short videos helps me refocus my life. If you care to explore this, you will find more here

Other things that help me are a healthy diet, exercise or yoga, sleeping enough, communicating with other people on this site, and allowing myself to discover hidden talents that are waiting to express themselves.

All the best to you.

As one of my friends said, sometimes we have to push ourselves a little. When we can get things done in this way we'll feel better and more confident of ourselves. I try to do the same. I fail mostly. Still I try again the next day and the day after the next day. Try to make a daily plan. Please dont feel bad when you can't achieve your tasks for the day but be happy that you tried and look forward to the next day. And be proud if you can complete even one in ten tasks. Finally don't debate in your mind whether you want to do the tasks or not, just get up and do them. Doing them again and again will make them into a habit. Also exercise like brisk walking helps. I tried with slow walking initially but it didn't help.

I m still trying all these out. Hope it helps you too.

Finally, if you still don't find the motivation to do anything you might need a little help from psych meds. These meds can just give you the little push needed to get up and try to get things done. So please get in touch with a psych doc and if possible a therapist as well.
