Depression is a thief. Of self esteem, joy, even “ability” sometimes

I was wondering what people here enjoyed when they were young? Say between the ages of 3 and 10. Lego, Barbies, ball games, tree climbing, drawing, colouring, reading? (Or?)(any of the “new” stuff

barbies, reading, role playing - i liked to play the role of a teacher and loved to imitate my grade four classteacher's mannerisms and teaching style....I still remember she was very strict and placed too much emphasis on performance. That's when I started getting conscious about performance which later on developed into exam phobia.

no I gave them all away when I grew up. I wish I hadn't tho. I saw a life sized baby doll in a pram the other day and I wanted it real bad.

Sometimes I would come across a backyard swing set. I liked to hook one knee over the bar in the A frame and twirl around, going upside down over and over.

Nice thread Fuzzy! What was your favorite thing?

When I was a kid I used to play with toy animals. I was a "boyish" girl, my stuffed animals played football and hockey. I wasn't a huge fan of barbies or dolls, I'd rather play with legos and draw.

Nowadays I seem to like toy cars a lot too. All sorts. Also idk what you call them but you have diff machine parts like those of cars, helicopters, aeroplanes etc and you have to assemble them with the help of screwdrivets and other tools. And then blocks for building houses.

My childhood was very traumatic and it was tough to find things I had enjoyed.

Sports really helped me with tension/stress/anxiety. I had found a great escape in sports of all kinds -- both individual and team sports. I loved the outdoors, too! I also read a lot! I read our set of encyclopedias and additional study guides. I often sat and studied the huge dictionaries, too. I know, geeky! I'd wanted a chemistry set and a microscope more than anything! I'd always made sure I'd had a bike. My love for bikes has continued into adulthood.

We grew up working, too. One brother and I always had jobs (mowing, weeding, odd jobs in the neighborhood, etc.) at that age, paying towards school clothes for the whole family.

Just beyond those ages, I'd had my own summer business every summer, so I could contribute monetarily to the household. (We were very poor.)

thanks everyone for sharing! I was (still am) a shy and introverted person, and grew up spending a lot of time with myself reading, writing and illustrating stories, playing teacher with my stuffed animals, cycling in the suburbs, or playing on the swings at the school playground after dinner. I daydreamed a lot too.

ps. nice username, "mulan"--there was a period of time in my childhood when I watched the disney movie Mulan literally every day for about a year because I loved her so much

Playing with my dogs, mostly. Out of everything, being with my husky and chow/lab made life bearable and fun. Whenever things got bad and I didn't want to be inside to deal with it, I'd go into the backyard and play with my puppies. I'd almost always end up in the dog house and fall asleep with them surrounding me to keep me warm. Those dogs kept me alive.

Outside of that, I did a lot of role playing, played with toys, and when I learned how to write I was constantly writing (and I've never stopped).
