Hello all,
I thought I would share this, although you all probably know the role vitamin D plays in depression. I have been dragging for a month, either feeling nervous or exhausted and like I have a low grade case of the blues. I've just felt flat; I was like, 'what is wrong with me?' I am not normally like this. I was like, am I having a midlife crisis?
I have literally been too tired to even want to converse. I've also been experiencing, though I did not get into it in my earlier posts when I joined this forum three days ago, that my muscles ache; my body hurts.
I had labs drawn just for the heck of it, and was told this morning I am significantly vitamin D deficient.
Now, I may still have a level of depression/anxiety also, but apparently this can really wreck havoc on someone's system. I guess I am posting this in case someone reading posts in this forum is unaware of this. If you haven't had one, I would encourage you to have your basic labs checked.

I was a Vitamin D deficient at seventh grade (with serum calcium level 4.3 mg/dl at the time of hospital admission) and now I kind of understand why I have massive anxiety and moderate depression now. Along with psychosis.

Vitamins and minerals can definitely play a significant role in our mental health. I take a D supplement, and notice that it definitely improves my mood.

Also I was in a really bad episode a while ago, and went to my GP for something unrelated, and she tested my Ferritin levels and it turned out they were dangerously low. A week after being on a high dose supplement, my mood was significantly improved.

I thought I was depressed. I'm vitamin D deficient.

And unfortunately it's not something doctors ever think of.

I suffered from terrible winter depression, although sometimes it was the exhaustion that came first and then my mood plummeted because I had no energy to do anything fun anymore - I was just dragging myself to work every day and could barely get up from my couch on the weekends.

Two years ago it got so bad that I couldn't even make it through a week at work anymore. Doctor 1: depression. Doctor 2: stress. Sleep more. I asked doctor 2 to test my vit D levels and had to pay for. It myself because he didn't see any reason to test. My level was at 5,3 ng/ml

About six months later I went back to doctor 1 with my results which said to get tested twice a year. Her response? "But everyone in the city is vitamin D deficienct!"

Anyway, I started using supplements and last winter was the easiest one I've had in maybe ten years!

I've heard that, too, the claim that everyone is vit D deficient. If that's the case, maybe they ought to reestablish what "normal" is, ya know? I started taking a supplement just in case, and am also trying to get 10 minutes sun exposure most days. I can't tell any difference yet, but I guess it can't hurt.

I recently had labs done, because was curious if I had some type of imbalance exacerbating things. I haven't received the results yet.

Curious what the plan of action is for D deficiency, vitamins?

Thank you for sharing, this is very helpful.

It's not really about normal though, but what's optimal for your health. Maybe everyone should be recommended to take a supplement. I guess mother nature made a mistake here. Of course we spend too much time inside these days, not getting enough sunlight...... But where I live, from around October-May the sun isn't even strong enough to create any vit. D. You could stand outside all day and it wouldn't make a difference.

Recently I started going to an internist who routinely orders blood work before check ups. That’s how I discovered I was Vitamin D deficient. I started taking vitamins and still, very deficient. Now he put me on prescription vitamin D. I also have been diagnosed with Depression (MDD), but I’m not sure any of the diagnoses I’ve gotten are correct. My kids are also testing the same, I’m so surprised. Why is everyone vitamin D deficient these days?

Too much time spent indoors, and also awareness about skin cancer.

It's because of our lifestyle and a bit because of our individual metabolic system's functioning probably.
