Have you ever felt yourself in that impossible position of feeling helpless at what to do or say for another?

Last night at support group when another individual had their turn to share I was literally at a loss for words in how to respond. This person had such a sad and concerning tale of woe that I found myself speechless. And I was not the only one. The entire circle, who normally readily offers encouraging words or support, was left silent. I ached to do something for the man. All I could muster was to ask if I could touch him (he sat immediately next to me) upon which I touched his shoulder and grasped his hand.

The thing is that what he said truly scared me. The short version of his story was that he had given up and was now waiting for the end. How on earth does one respond to this?

Life is not easy..
We all need someone to care...
Are we all compulsory...

Hanging on in there for those who care...
Comfort and piece of mind are basic's

Today I wait for the end....
I am not comfortable today...
Other days, I hope I will share some more happy times...

That the whole group listened and didn't deny, tell him his feelings were wrong was helpful. Maybe say I am glad you told us. Then the next time he comes to group just say "hi"/give him a hug?

I'm so sorry, WishfulThinker66 Thank you so much for sharing this. I feel that way often as well. I feel like I can't help and that I'm not doing enough. However, I think you did great! You've listened to what he had to say, didn't judge him, and made him understand that he wasn't alone. Sometimes words are not necessary. Sometimes we just need someone to listen to us. You've done just that. You're a wonderful person. Thank you so much for doing that. Just keep doing what you're doing. I ensure you that you're helping out a lot of people that way. Sending many hugs to you
