The saddest song I've ever heard is If You Could Read My Mind. Gordon Lightfoot wrote it while he was going through a divorce.

Quote:
To add to the list, I find the Motorhead song called Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me to be especially sad and depressing. I won't go into details because I'm sure the subject of the song could be triggering, though I'm sure the title alone could be enough for some to get an idea. I'm a huge Motorhead fan, but I find that one hard to listen to. |

Alice in Chains "Nutshell"
It's not just the lyrics that make it sad, it's the music, the tone, and the fact that the singer died from a prolonged seclusion immersed in addiction. We chase misprinted lies We face the path of time And yet I fight, and yet I fight This battle all alone No one to cry to No place to call home Ooh Ooh-ooh Ooh Ooh-ooh My gift of self is raped My privacy is raked And yet I find, and yet I find Repeating in my head If I can't be my own I'd feel better dead Ooh Ooh-ooh Ooh Ooh-ooh |

Bohemian Rhapsody.
Mamaaa, Just killed a man, Put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, Now he's dead Mamaaa, life had just begun, But now I've gone and thrown it all away Mama, oooh, Didn't mean to make you cry, If I'm not back again this time tomorrow, Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters

Eleanor Rigby comes immediately to mind.
Has a different tinge of emotion but Wildfire by Michael Martin Murphey struck me as a very sad song when I was a youngster. No shortage of sad songs out there. We need them I think. |
