After a recent failed trial of something novel, my current psychiatrist has taken me off all antidepressant medications, although I remain on a benzodiazepine. It will be interesting to see how I do without any antidepressants. I suspect significant institutional pressure exists for mental health practitioners to keep those with formal depression diagnoses on some sort of medication. __________________ My dog mastered the "fetch" command. I've made several attempts to go off my antidepressant over the years, tapering off at the proper levels, etc., all of which have failed miserably. My last attempt was about a year ago, wherein I decided that I might be able to do fine with just mindfulness. Tapered off properly. Crashed. I don't believe I'll ever try again because I've come to think that there is after all a physiological component to my depression which I have to address in order to function. When I finally went back on a low dose of my medication (Prozac) after a mighty argument with myself about being a "quitter", I felt better immediately. I've really come to believe everyone's situation and physiology is different. (((( HUGS to all )))) __________________ |

dear rohag and mopey....please keep posting about this...
i am suspicious that the antidepressants change your brain ... so any withdrawal is extremely difficult... i have been taking meds mainly because of panic and terror... mostly at night...the last time i withdrew from celexa i thought i was doing great for two months and then one night...bang at 300 am a terror/panic attack... i was so frightened i went back to celexa....i wonder about me and my panics... i try to follow those cbt therapists but i probably havent learned yet that i am not going CRAZY... |

I'm not sure if there are any studies about this, Little Turtle. They always tell me Prozac isn't habit-forming, but I remember when I first started taking it -- this was YEARS ago -- they were loath to give long-term prescriptions because the drug was fairly new and they weren't sure of long-term effects. But over time it seems as if most resistance to long-term Prozac therapy has dwindled away.
All I can say is this last time, when I tried to DC it, I reverted to the same state I was in before I ever started taking it. There was nothing particularly different about it. As to CBT I think it is a very logical, well-meant approach, and useful to a point, but have always found that my own deep disturbances seem far too deeply buried to be much affected by even the most excellent reasoning. __________________ |
