Okay, so... Last week I found out that a good friend of mine had past away. Like me he was a freshmen in college. I decided to go to his funerAL (I was invited) IN glasgow, Scottland. I also had one class and a conference with the professor of that class. I also had to turn in a paper at the conference on the friday the funeral took place. I emailed my proffesor three tiomes explaining the situation (ahead of time) so that she would understand that i could not make her conference. she never responded to any of my emails so I thought everything was cogent.

This morning (thursday), She walks past me and goes to the fdront of the class room. and sits down and starts taking attendance. And she wasnot doing anything becasue not every one was here. I ask her, "Did you happen to get my email?" and she responds, "Yes, about that. It is your fault for missing my class and my conference, so why should I even talk to you right now?" I was in shock and embaressment becasue ten other people watched as she yelled at me. i then said "Well, can I still turn in my paper?" and she said, "well, becasue you were at a funeral, i guess so. I need it now." so I gave it to her and She said, "It is your responsibiliuty to contact your class mates about classs information when you miss. This was the first time I missed. I asked her why she was so upset when she never answerd any of my emails. I also had to present a speech about affirmative action and she then said "you and three other people will not be going today, there for your presentation better be perfect on tuesday." She ruined my whole self esteem for the day. I felt like a worthelss bit of matter. I felt so bad yet so angery. She then asked me to set up the computer to the project (I am the only one who knows how) and then I just walked out.

Was this wrong of me to act like this? I just was so frustrated that she made me a badguy. I thihnk it was unfair that she teaches communications classes and does not email back. Please correct me if I am wrong.

What are your views on this?

thank's

Roman James

I think that your teacher was in the wrong, if she had a problem with what you were saying in the emails she should have emailed you back. To me your reaction to the situation sounds reasonable.

Thanks for your feed back. I hate when something like that happens to me and I fel it was my fault. I get really anxious when stuff like that happens with a teacher becasue it reminds me of aall the traumatizing teachers I had k-8th. In highschool all my teachers were perfect. Its bad enough i hate college. For a teacher to make me relive times i never want to go back to makes me sooo upset.

Thanks you for your feed back

First, I'm really sorry about what happened with your friend

Whatever your teacher had lodged up her inner crevasses is seriously affecting her judgment. You need to take this higher than her. She had absolutely zero right to treat you that way. Teachers like this destroy schooling, in my opinion. Please try your best not to let her control you like that. It's probably something relating to her personal life at home. She knows she can't control that, but at least she can control her students. It's not fair, it's not right, and I really hope you can do something about it!

If the grade comes back negative in any way for being late, DO NOT take it. Don't even accept the paper back. In fact, I'd have a number ready to call in case she tries something like that. If you've got a cell, whip it out and dial away. When she asks you what you're doing, tell her you're reporting her

Most importantly, don't let this get your own self esteem down! You were doing what was right, there's nothing you could have done any differently. Take pride in the fact that you still even managed to finish the paper! Lots of people likely wouldn't have in your spot (I know I certainly wouldn't have). Keep on going, good luck with the rest of the class, and take care of yourself

Hi James;
I am sorry about your friend, but try to remember all the good times you had together when things get rough. As far as your teach, I think she was totally wrong the she reacted, if she had a problem, she should have emailed you back or tried to set up a private meeting with you to talk it over. I think you were brave to walk out, you are paying for college they should respect your feeling too, I know they are trying to teach you respect, a future and giving you knowledge to do anything, but I think she forgot the respect part.
Don't let anyone make you feel like crap, you are a great person and will have a wonderful future ahead.

Hugs
Cindy

I too am very sorry about your friend and about the experience you had. Years of experience has me taught me to not leave it up to one person. I assume your college class has a policy about "no late papers for any reason or you'll be marked down" (the high school my girls go to has that and it's infuriating). Anyway, if there is ever a reason you will be absent again, send the teacher an email, but also copy it to the dean of the department and the dean of attendance. In your email, make sure to say something along the lines of "as I have confirmation of when you receive this email, if I do not hear from you in blank days or hours, I will proceed under the assumption that this is acceptable." It sounds formal and goofy, but it works. I work with patients in research projects and if they miss an appointment we call, we mail a letter, then mail certified giving a deadline. It works. That way you have covered yourself. Why do you hate college?
