I am interested in getting VNS and am in the preliminary stages of having the procedure done. I am wondering if anyone has had VNS and whether or not it has worked for them. The DVD about it that I was sent said that it can take up to a year to work.

Thanks in advance for any posts about this.

I was referred to a PDoc for it because he is one of not many that do it around here--Metro area of 3 million. I'm considered TRD.

The problem is few insurers will pay for it. I'm on Medicare (SSDI) and they reviewed their stance about a year ago and decided against it.

I'd go for it, but I can't afford it personally.

Do you have a source to pay?

The VNS is a study so everything is free plus reimbursement for having to travel to the University to get check-ups. Perhaps there is a study in your area too? Thanks for your response.

i watched the procedure on the documentary channel. the lady they were doing it on said the room got brighter when they were testing her with it installed. that's pretty amazing. her hand responses were more rapid too. like it "lights" up the brain!
i have had good results with meds thus far but my sister is considering having it done. she has not responded to meds well and suffers from severe depression.
there has been considerable development of this procedure and i wish you well if decide to go for it. if i weren't doing well i'd be the first in line...
every 5 years or so they just have to put a new battery in and off you go.

It does seem to work for half those who get it.

If it's free, then look into it.

For those who are unable to get one, here's an article about using massage to stimulate the vagus nerve. http://www.antmt.com/art_benefits.shtml
