My mother suffers from a mutant type of celiac's disease called Celiac Sprue. She is doing really poorly right now. Wondering if anyone has it or knows about it.....Her drs don't seem to know how to treat this other than her gluten free diet which isn't working anymore.
Her diarrhea doesn't stop and she has to go to Hosp. every few days for fluids.
If any one knows about this or can steer me in any direction to find out more please let me know.

Thanks

Corticosteroids
  • A small percentage of patients with celiac sprue fail to respond to a gluten-free diet. In some patients who are refractory, corticosteroids might be helpful.
Because lactose intolerance is common in people with celiac sprue, vital improvements occur when a lactose-free diet is introduced.

Complete healing of the small intestine, meaning the villi are intact and working, usually occurs in 3-6 months, although it may take up to 2 years in older persons.
