I have had moments where I don't look like "me" in the mirror. I hate it. At one point, I kept asking my oldest son and my H "do I look different to you?" and finally T told me to STOP. So I did.

I also have this thing where I don't recognize my hands...they look like they belong to someone else. So when I am under stress I try to not look at my hands very much. Eeek.
Thanks for this!

Some insiders see the mother.
That really freaks everyone out--especially protector parts who want to
"protect" us and have hurt the body thinking it is the mother.....
scary stuff.

For a split second, we sometimes, see nothing. Or we see someone so unfamiliar it's startling. We avoid mirrors also. To see a stranger looking back at you is too disconcerting.

There are times when I don't recognize who is in the mirror. I am starting to look more and more in to mirrors. There is a mirror wall in the elevator when I go to my T office and I look into it everytime I go so I know that it is me in the present and not someone else.

I have trouble with mirrors too. When brushing my teeth, I have to focus on my teeth only. I do a cursory glance in the mirror to make sure I don't have anything in my teeth or make sure my hair isn't standing on end or something but otherwise I don't look. Too many times in the past, I have looked in the mirror too hard and ended up somewhere else with a smashed up face or bruised face not knowing what happened. I'm not sure what triggered me when I would look, not sure if I saw another family member's resemblance or just my own self triggered me but it's not worth it to me to look.

When one of us Eriks is out, we tend to avoid looking into mirrors, even when we are wearing our masks.
I assume you all know why...

We hate mirrors!!!
Avoid them at all costs, even walking down the street
and passing a building with a reflective surface freaks us out!!!
An in the house, any type of reflective surface is bad and scary!!!

My answer is very similar to Tree's, especially this quote: "I also have this thing where I don't recognize my hands...they look like they belong to someone else. So when I am under stress I try to not look at my hands very much. Eeek. "

That said, however I actually stare into mirrors for long periods of time. (which is TOTALLY different for me than those dratted "mirror excercises" that groups use grrrr). but my face is different so often (and has been so all my life) that I am always deeply fascinated.
My face never seems the same twice in a row. Often i do recognize different ages like 16 ... but there is just as often that i don't know the face - so i will stare into the eyes to see if i know me. Or lay on my bed and stare at the closet mirror to see who i am today.
Taller, shorter, hair lenght change? Eye color change, facial features change, eyes wide open or slitted or something i've never seen before? Sometimes it is my dad's (abuser) face and i do look away quickly. i hate that face.

Sometimes we see someone in the mirror, or reflective window and we know it is Debbie51. Other times there is like no one there - well sort of like there is a body but it is like just a person in a crowd...someone who means nothing to us.

I found it really interesting whoever wrote about their hands. Oh, It was treehouse. I too have looked at "my hands" and they look too big or too old although on very rare occasions my hands or feet look like a childs. This usually happens when I am drying off after a shower.

So I guess my question is who is seeing what? And if it is me Debbie51 seeing feet that are too big, why would my own feet look too big to me? If it is an alter seeing my(Debbie51's) feet then why would it seem that I (Debbie51) am thinking "those feet look too big?".

Does this make any sense at all to anyone? I'm so confused

Though I have no issues with mirrors, there are plenty of times I feel disconnected from my body so to speak, and look at myself as though I'm not. Like, I'm in someone else's body or that it's not even a body but some weird object. If this makes sense.

i don't hav many mirrors in my home. I always think that i feel so different that there must be something visibly changing in my face. I haven't looked in a mirror when i have split though. I don't know how but T can always tell.

thank you. thank you.

i thought maybe it was just me...or we & da peeps.

never look in mirrors...or if i do never recognize whoever is looking back (okay intellectually know its me but...well ya know)same with pictures...easy to pick me out...i'm always the short fat one...99.9999999% always the shortest....easy to pick out.

if i am forced to look at a pix i can tell which peep it is but not if it is me stumpy.

totally confuses the hell out of t...can't really explain it to her well...she is maybe beginning to get it but hard to explain looking in a mirror and not seeing yourself or not knowing what you look like.

but thank you...i thought it was just me.

stumpy & da peeps
(sounds like a poorly named aflac barnyard band)

I just had a convo about this with a gal from my survivors group and we both have the same reaction (sorta) - we both lose a lot of time in bathrooms or where there are mirrors. We both stare into them for huge amounts of time trying to figure out who the person is in there, whose features do they have, why are the eyes different, what can be seen in the depths of the eyes.....

i'm kind of confused about mirrors. i know one of my parts posted here a long time ago asking why the face looked so different every time, yet i avoid looking at mirrors at all costs. even when i apply make up i try not to look at my face. i don't like to look at photos of me, either. sometimes i do, and it feels weird because i generally see myself as ugly (eating disorder stuff) yet sometimes i may think the body looks okay.

also i find that the body looks totally different in mirrors rather than in reflections on glass etc. hmm...

nice to hear about everyone's experiences, but i'm sorry they're scary / not so nice for the most of you. safe to all if that's alright.

I avoided this before now. I really don't have the situations so many mentioned. When I was a teen I spent an hour a day putting on makeup every day and the purpose was to make sure we could "pass for normal" that day. Passing for normal was one of the big goals at all times, mostly to avoid any abuse we could avoid.

Now we struggle with shame issues and when we look in the mirror it triggers loathing and lies about how horrible I look and how disgusting I am in an older and heavier, unfit body with gray hair. We did not want to have a body at all and spent much of our time being anywhere but aware of our body if we had any choice.

We find we have a thing where we start looking at pictures of our lives from babyhood on up - the pics we do have we tend to stare at very intensely like we are trying to see who we were back then and what was going on inside that little girl. We know her life was damn near unbearable and we look for evidence of that because we also have alts whose job is to deny all the abuse and misery. We are not repulsive to look at but we''ve always felt ugly.
