a few weeks ago counselor was telling us just a tiny bit of what she has discovered through talking with the many hundreds inside she has met so far and it was very scary to hear that so much terrible things had been done to us but she was using it as a way to help us understand how there are most likely thousands of unknown triggers for us and we may be surprised at what some of them could be and we found out she was right we wont share here because we dont want to trigger anyone else but earlier this morning emilee got so scared we had to spend almost 2 hours trying to calm her down and we are so tired now. does anyone else keep finding new triggers after you thought maybe you already knew them all?
Thanks for this!

I am learning new triggers everyday. I have no idea what all of them are, I just get panic and not sure why. But my biggest trigger is ice-blue eyes in a man's face. Like the color of the light blue sky.

Yes, we are still learning our triggers. AT first it is hard on us until we learn that those around us are not going to hurt us like the ones that hurt us before. If had not been for those few people that did not use our trigger againts us we would be lost too. It was with the help of a few good people that we were finely able to learn to keep the body safer from abuse. WE still have to be carefull around certain people but at least now we are not switching so much with the inner walls up for safety issues. We are able to switch with out lost of time. That in it self was a huge weight off for us. It told us that we were healing and growing back together again.
safe hugs from all of us to all of you!

At first when ever I got triggered or one of my alters did that all the triggers were rooted in my past. but it turns out finding new triggers is part of being human and allowing myself to participate more fully in life. its amazing what foods I have never tried and am now trying them and finding I dont like them they give me a bad taste, they are too bitter or too sour or too sweet. and then at the mention of those new foods I have never had in the past and have recently discovered I dont like or am allergic to them, I have a reaction to it, sometimes my mouth cringes, sometimes I can actually taste it even though I dont have it in my mouth right now. the same thing happens with anything new I try and have never in my past had any exposure to it. new clothes that are too stiff or scratchey, new shoes that pinch, I went into a store with my partner this week and we were messing around with things I picked up the cymballs and crashed them togeether. scared myself so bad I dropped them clattering to the floor.

I asked my therapist about this and whether this could mean in the past I repressed experiencing these things so now they trigger me. She lightly laughted and said "now you know how a baby or toddler feels while they are learning about their world (her youngest is a toddler so many of her comparisons are about this lately LOL) she told me life is full of surprises and living life means you have reactions to things and your body responds in kind. its perfectly normal and finding out what my likes and dislikes and reactions to things as I live my life is in fact a life long things. we never stop finding things that we like dislike or have intense reactions to. just because its a new trigger does not always mean uh oh theres something more deep down inside me. finding new triggers is just as much part of life as being born and living life and then getting old then dying. triggers (things we dot like, things we have intense reactions to) are always there waiting to be discovered as we live. boy was i glad finding new triggers is just a part of normal life, just like finding things that make me happy are part of normal life

given what my therapist (in the post I just did and hit submit before I was done LOL) told me I can now understand how alters can have all kinds of triggers. they have the triggers from the abusive past plus they have the normal triggers that they discover when they are out in the world living life and discovering things they like and dont like or have normal reactions to.
now I understand why a lot of my alters had triggers that I did not have too. it all makes sense to me now.

Yes! Unfortunately, we can relate to this. We are still discovering new triggers, and it can be so frustrating!! We recently discovered a new trigger involving windows. (of all things!!) We are just trying to do our best to work through it, learn how best to cope with it and calm ourselves, as we discover them.
We wish you much strength in doing the same as you uncover yours. ~Emma
