Having imaginary friends and alters is different from each other. talk with you treatment people they can tell you the difference and why you can be aware of your imaginary friend but not be aware of the alters.

Some people know when their alters take over and which ones because they have this thing called co consciousness. its a big word that means being aware of your alters, being able to talk to your alters, being able to hear your alters, interacting with them.

Some people know when their alters take over and which one not through having the knowledge but by their therapists telling them- your alter kevin was here today and we talked about this. or other versions of the therapist letting them know an alter came out during a session.

Some people know because their friends have told them they met this alter or that one, or asked why did you tell me your name is so and so when I know your name is Reva?

Some people know when their alters come out and which ones because they find evidence - things they wouldnt normally buy, drawings, journal entries., a pack of ciigarettes when they dont smoke.

theres all kinds of ways to discover which alters come out when. Talk with your treatment people and they can help you discover who your alters are, when they come out and why.

in my system we have shared memories and co-consciousness among most of us there is one who refuses to share consciousness because she likes the anonymity being able to move around and make her moves anonymously she is very noisy when inside

this gives her her alibi because when she does come out and goes within again she denies everything she does and stands with a smirk on her face which doesn't tell anything

Though we know it is she because she is the only one refusing shared memory and co-consciousness. We have come a long way by connecting to each other and there is just this one who insists on sabotaging or trying to sabotage causing pain and problem when there is no need but she is in pain and she is lost so we love her and give her our support there is no other way

I am just now seeing them and still cannot always tell who takes over when I am concious of it.I have to stop and feel it. With the blackouts, I only know after someone tells me what I did.

I think it can depend on your stage of healing. Many people are at the stage you are at in not knowing anything other than losing time. Co-conciousness (being aware of other parts) often comes with good therapy.

For a long time we never knew who was out when. We are only aware now through lots of investigation and hard work to learn about ourselves. "Black outs" can be caused by lots of things, and we too encourage you to discuss what is happening with your doctor(s) so you can find the best approach to dealing with your unique situation.
