Does anyone do this? I have PTSD from a car accident 9yrs ago and ever since I have times where I am driving and don't remember it until all of a sudden I need to hit my brakes or I arrive somewhere. It's been happening more and more. I'm not sure if it's related to the PTSD or if this is something that others go through as well. I know there isn't a "normal" when it comes to dissociating but just looking for experiences/thoughts.
It really scares me when I have my kids with me. |

You have taken a huge step in understanding you do this. When I am at my worst I refrain from driving. It is a pain but better to be safe. This too shall pass. Take care.

there are ways to combat this kind of dissociation.. such as grounding (other locations call this mindfulness). When my wife and I are on long trips we take with us a bag of candy, fruits, CD's... we use these to bring us back to the present moment any time one or the other starts clipping into highway dissociation. Some people roll their windows down because the breeze helps keep them focused and aware. (other locations call the spacing off while driving/riding highway hypnosis.) |

I just wanted to suggest that when the kids are in the car, they can be a great help by playing car games with you, such as the alphabet game. You each takes turns finding each of the letters of the alphabet in signs, on buildings, in car license plates, etc. You can make up a lot of versions of this, finding plates from other states, different farm animals, different colours of cars, depending on what types of areas you're driving through, and how old your kids are.
It can also help to take new routes to familiar places. You'll be less likely to go on "auto-pilot" if you have to keep an eye out for which streets to turn on. Thank you for sharing your question! |

only experience i have of this is when my late partner was nearing the end, his wish was to spend as much time as we could at a special place 150 miles away, one Friday evening after finishing work and packing the car we set off as usual, me driving, I remember nothing about the journey from 5 minutes in till we reached our destination almost three hours later! I had driven down motorways, dual carageways, single track country lanes, over traffic lights and roundabouts, yet to this day do not remember the journey. my Partner asked if i was ok when i stopped the car, apparently i said yes why, and he replied because i had not said a word the whole three hours! oops!
I always drove with music on and the window open, and he apparently had tried conversing with me too, so when one dissociates there is little i feel can be done to stop it, though sweets can help stop it starting so too can plenty of rest beforehand. i only drive a mobility scooter now, so the roads are fairly safe. |
