Hi everyone. I was wondering I guess how common it is to suffer from DID along with other things. From my understanding, Alex has Borderline Personality Disorder with SI issues as diagnosed, and she told Shanna that, who regularly communicates with me.
I guess I just don't get if that is normal... If I were to ever integrate with Alex, would I then also have her BPD? Does it work like that for anyone else that one of their alters has a problem that the core or other alters don't deal with?
Alex also suffers from a smoking addiction which is causing me problems with running and financial issues.

Don't have to comment, just kinda venting... Idk.

I dont know about actual documented statistic about the commonality of DID and other medical and mental disorders..

but when you think about what it takes for a person to become DID - extreme trauma before the age of 5, Take me for example...

I became DID because I was emotionally, sexually and physically abused before the age of 5.

those factors each taken separately come with their own physical and mental health problems

example someone who is emotionally abused at a young age is going to have PTSD, Anxiety problems, depending upon what the focal point of the emotional abuse they could have eating disorders, phobias, low self esteme, suicidal, self injure, form distorted /misconceptions of their world and those around them, have trust issues and other issues that result in rocky relationships...right there you have someone who has Borderline Personality disorder, PTSD, Panic/anxiety disorders, eating disorders..

add that to all the components that someone who has been sexually abused, and all the components of someone that has been physically abused...

in my opinion its very common for someone with DID to have multiple medical and mental health diagnosis/symptoms/ problems.

will you have to deal with all the issues/problems and diagnosis that your alters have? we cant answer that, only you and your treatment providers can answer whats going to happen for you when/if you integrate your alters..

what I can tell you is what happened when I integrated...yes everything that was my alters became part of me.. their good qualities, their bad qualities, their good behaviors, their bad behaviors, their good or bad habits, ...their whole way of being diagnosis health issues... all became merged with me to form one whole person again. which is why I came here 2 plus yrs ago to psych central looking for people who were dealing with integration and post integration issues.. its not easy dealing with all that by your self.

suggestion talk with your treatment providers they can talk with you about the type of internal system you have and what to expect as you go through integration and be there for you as you go through post integration issues like this.

I like to denie....a lot...but if I let myself be honest....I would say that I have obsessive compulsive disorder and I have real bad panic attacks. But you probably like myself have been diagnosed with everything under the sun.I will also confess I have anorexia/ bulimia....I just don't like to admit/ talk about those things. Thanks for going out on a limb and asking around ...you have made me think.....thanks!

safe hugs gypsy,

we know that at times we do carry on some things that we wish we did not. but we also had times like smoking and drinking that was reduced because the truama and pain was dealt with.

our rule of thumb is each alter needs to heal first before getting rid of the pacifier! please be kind and understand to all of those within you!
and please come and vent all that you want to!

we have done it enough ourselfs these last few years.

listening and caring

What a good question! It kind of takes all the possible issues and lays them down neatly in front of you all. Isn't it amazing that amongst all of your parts that you could formulate this question? What great insight. Of course there is work to do but steps count.

I don't think I focused too much on the diagnosis of each part as much as there was just a need for a great deal of communication amongst us, no matter what the individual issues were. Even to this day there is quite a lot of respect for each part despite what they developed into in order to cope.

Focusing on the communication has made the various issues be minimized. I always find there is something to work on though.

At times it appears the lines between us are dissolved and there is fruitful dialogue going on and a kind of 'knowing'. There is a sense of, not a medical model but a living breathing example of life and living and just carrying on. Is this how others live? Perhaps.

The abuse that caused this remains but rather fades as we communicate amongst ourselves and enjoy the company of each other.

All the best to you and yours as you work through you.

Thank you all for your responses. It stirred the virtual pot of simmering self questioning (the good kind) and helped me think.
