Manatees are the coolest! Happy Manatees...

They are also known as sea cows and are VERY friendly and safe. Happy Manatees...

I think we need to come up with names for these two. One is a boy and one's a girl. Happy Manatees...

I have a funny story about Manatees. My father in law took us to see Manatees in this great reserve. I said; "oh look, they are so cute, so sweet" Well, he yelled at me and told me they were not and how could they be and now the running joke with him some 8 years later is sweet and cute. They are indeed both.

I like this thread a lot!

Peter and Betty.......perfect to my mind, what do the rest of you think?

I'm going to see how manatees are for visualizations, for stress relief I can imagine swimming in clear warm water with gentle beasts.

What sort of sounds do they make?

Sarah

I like Peter and Betty too.

I had a dream I was swimming with manatees last night. It was pretty cool.

I like this thread too. They are so big, but gentle and not scary at all. Happy Manatees... Happy Manatees... Happy Manatees...

Sarah, keeper of the life jackets, asked,

What sort of sounds do they make?

Mantees emit sounds that are within human auditory range. They make sounds such as squeaks and squeals when frightened, playing, or communicating, particularly between cow and calf. No air is released from the manatee when these sounds are made, and it is not clear where the sounds are being produced or if they serve any other purpose.

Manatees are mammals and breath air through their noses at the surface - with nostrils which close tightly when submerged. They breathe every few minutes when active or swimming, and every 10 to 15 minutes when resting. They are capable of exchanging 98% of their lungs capacity in one breath. Their lungs are very large, and are also used for buoyancy control. The rushing sound of a deep exhale and breath sound much like a snorkeler. This sound, and the associated "footprint" left by the manatees tail and body at the surface are clues which reveal the presence of manatees in the area.

Whoa! So cool! Thank you, keeper of umbrellas and creator of good ideas!

((((((((Petunia))))))))

I love that it is still a mystery as to where in a manatee their sounds are being produced. Makes me smile, the thought of all their beautiful music.

I couldn't get the mini-clips to work, but I heard them singing and the pics are nice to look at. The manatee cam will be back on in the morning, 8 to 5 EST. Happy Manatees...

I have a manatee toy that talks and makes manatee noises. It was a Christmas gift from my mom. I actually have 3 stuffed manatees. I will share.

We got critters like that here, called dugongs, but we never hear about them eating from peoples hands.
We get to swim with seals & dolphins though (& sometimes sharks Happy Manatees... )
