I was at session today and my t was asking one of the young ones (a helper) to drink the water she had in her hand. She was very thirsty but was afraid to drink. She thought she would choke. Some of us eat or drink for the system and others don't. My t explained that by having the young one do a task that another alter does it will help them to work one another toward being one. Toward seeing the body and us as one. Has anyone else experienced this in therapy? And if so what was the good stuff or the bad stuff that came of it? Thanks

my therapist and I made a few attempts at doing this with my alters but we soon discovered that my internal system of alters was primarily "categorical" meaning each of my alters has their own jobs, purposes, reasons for being, way of being with no cross over abilities. We had progress in this with only two of my alters. It was a positive thing for these two alters and I because there was less chaos, more sharing/co operation, As the host it caused me to be less anxiety ridden and more grounded/stable. there was no negative side of this other than we were not able to do this with my internal system of alters as a whole.

that said here in NY it is pretty standard to do this in therapy with DID, because it is a good assessment tool in discovering how much co consciousness there is among the internal system of alters with each other and with the host. the more ability of the alters to cross over into other alters "jobs" the more co consciousness there is with in the system and the host.

Thank you both for responding it was helpful. Sometimes just knowing that there is someone who will listen is just as important as the response. Thanks again.
Thanks for this!
