Does anyone else feel uncomfortable with people who don't have dissociative disorders calling themselves "multiple systems"? If someone has DID and prefers to call themselves a multiple system for their own personal comfort, that's understandable, but if they don't have it and treat it as some sort of spiritual thing, it really grinds my gears.
Maybe you guys haven't seen this happening, but trust me, it's a thing. |

a reproductive system a circulatory system a digestive system a nervous system a skeletal system a muscular system a system of organs.... Schools around here also teach things like its acceptable to have a multiple system for how you do things example multi tasking or one thing at a time, its ok to have a multiple system for your hobbies meaning having more than one hobby and how you do that.... so no it does not bother me when I encounter people in my town referring to their self as a "multiple system". directly related to the mental disorder well around here where I live and work well I see it as you cant control others. as far back in time as possible there are documentations of how there are some human beings that for what ever reasons mental disordered related, physical health related or learning problem related or for attention has faked, pretended, to have illnesses that they did not have. theres even a debate about whether the most popular case history about DID is true or not because of conflicting reports, books movies and new information that came to light after "sybil's" death. there is always going to be those that have mental and physical health problems and theres always going to be those that do not have it and claim to have it. I can spend my life making myself miserable getting irritated, angry, upset and what have you about others and whether what they claim to have is true or not or I can say you know what thats their life not mine. I move on to things that I need to take care of for me, things that make me happy, things that make my life to be the way I want my life to be and leave others to taking care of their self. if thats what they want their life to be like so be it. this is america where anyone can have the life that they want to have even if that life is claiming to be DID if they are not. its not up to me to say others cant say what ever they want to say... frankly I wouldnt want someone to walk up to me and say hey amanda you cant say your eyes are hazel, or cant say you have this problem or that problem.... they are not in this body of mine so they can only make the judgment about me based on what they....think....in their own minds.. for all they know I may be wearing colored contacts, for all they know my doctor may be considering something I havent told them about in entirety.... see what I mean....making judgements about people who walk up to me and say...Im a multiple system could end up proving me wrong because Im not in their body, I dont go to their doctor appointments and such and just because they may be different from me does not say they dont have DID. it just says they are different...DID has set diagnostics but how it affects and shows itself can be vastly different from one person to the next... so to me its a waste of my time to worry about whether someone says to me they have a multiple system. only their treatment providers can say for sure whether they are DID or not. |

I haven't heard of people referring to themselves as having multiple systems. Try not to let what ever another person says upset you. The passage of time will show you the true contents of a persons character. Trends only last for a time. Maybe whatever it is is a fad.
You concentrate on your journey. |

Completely agree. I know they aren't trying to hurt anyone, but they're doing more harm than they think.

What i really dont like is when people seem to WANT to be multiple. There is no thrill about having DID. Its not a good thing to have, although we ate comfortable being this way, its not like anyone in our life KNOWS about it besides husband and T.

This. There are positive ways to cope with it but it's a struggle no matter what, and there is absolutely no reason anyone should want to go through this.

I agree that its a hard problem to handle and that it may not be right morally for people to say they have dissociative problems when they don't...that said this website has a rule that we are not supposed to question whether someone has a mental disorder or not. here we are supposed to accept that what people are posting is as is...
there are options here for members to use if they come upon posts/posters that trigger them in some way (make them angry uneasy what ever) ... the first one is report the post you are uncomfortable with and why. then the moderators will look at the post to see if that posting goes against the rules for this site. the second is the ignore feature...that can be found by clicking on the posters name then click on user lists then add to ignore list. this will allow you to not have to see this posters posts. when you are reading posts it will show up as ...this poster is on your ignore list and then a link you must click in order to see that persons post saying remove this poster from your ignore list. you can also pm members and moderators to talk with in chat or by pm. I realize this problem may be happening on another website but thought you might want to know there are ways you can protect yourself from this here on psych central. |
