I have some mildly dissociative traits. I have really scared myself today though and am hoping someone could reassure me. I was doing my make up and left the room and come back in. I couldn't see my make up brushes I had left on the windowsill. Thought it was weird, looking along the windowsill (they're in a mug so not easy to miss) behind the curtains. Then looking to see if I'd put them in one of my drawers that were open or on my dressing table - not there. Beginning to think I'm losing it and must've taken them out of the room with me and I looked back and there they are on the windowsill. As if someone had moved them and put them back. I am so freaked out right now. How could I not have seen them?! It has really shaken me up. Can anyone reassure me? Has this sort of thing happened to you?

Yup! All the time. Shoes, my shoes go missing all the time. It's all part of it, you are not alone.

only all the time... annoying. shoes, mascara, my phone.... even when I JUST had it... pens... my book. and when i'm in a small room and I KNOW it can't have gone anywhere... it's gone. Sometimes I took them without knowing it and carried them someplace, other times there right where I thought they were but for whatever reason, I couldn't see them. it is freaky - like I left this dimension or they did or something. as I went to sleep last night and turned over, pulling the covers, I heard the pen drop to the floor that i'd spent a long time looking for and had gotten another one.

Thanks so much everyone. It's exactly like you've described- like i or it went into another dimension. I was looking straight at them the whole time. I feel so relieved I'm not alone. I was so scared. Thank you all.

Yes I have had that happen to me once. I was sitting at a desk writting. I put my pen down on the desk to look at some papers and when I went to pick up the pen again I couldn't find it. I just kept looking at the desk. I hadn't gotten up and hadn't dropped it on the floor. Interestingly enough I couldn't visualize the pen in my mind. I was looking for the pen but didn't have a picture of it in my mind. Suddenly the picture of the pen entered my mind and as I was looking at the desk the pen appeared. It was right in front of me. That freaked me out. I had had an auto accident a month or so earlier so I thought it was from that. I will never know. I was also DID then but didn't know at the time. The only correlation I can make to not seeing the pen on the desk was that I didn't see it in my mind. And when I did I could see the pen on the desk. I wouldn't worry too much unless it happens often. Than I would go see a neurologist for a check up. Feel better.

i think even for people who don't have dissociation or any mental health disorder can experience this. people can be preoccupied so much they don't remember moving something, doing something, saying something, etc. it can be annoying and sometimes a little scary though.
Thanks for this!

Put my favorite pen in my pocket so I wouldn't lose it to go answer my door. Spent an unseemly amount of time retracing my steps to find it. At least I found it. There r a number of things I've put in safe places so I wouldn't lose them. I should right down where those safe places are cuz many things are safely tucked away and LOST.

Happens way to often. Looking for sunglasses that are on your head, or something is already in your pocket. Yet you spend 10-15 minutes looking for these items (then you can only laugh at yourself.)

Finding things out of place in apartment like someone "had been in there." Yet nothing missing. That is what really freaks me out. But trying to accept and deal...

Thanks everyone. That really helps. I'm always losing things like sunglasses on my head and so on, but that doesn't worry me too much. What really worried me was that I had been looking at the make up brushes and not seeing them. Thanks for all your replies.

Every day, with the damn remote control. I don't move it. Its always on the same spot on the same table, right in front of me. But can I see the damn thing? No chance!

Lol, it used to freak me out that things move around. I'll reach for my coke that was just right there, but now it's on the table. I can get being distracted and misplacing stuff. I've even been caught up in a trance totally lost in thought doing stuff, but to come too and discover that things are done like the bills are paid, the mail has been mailed, we already ate breakfast, I just drove 15 miles and just about to get too work ...

I've spent a whole hour looking for my keys before. I checked both vehicles twice, in/under furniture getting freaked because I just had them. On a notion or a last ditch whim before busting out in tears because I'm an hour late for an appointment, I found them hanging in the shed door's lock out back. I also found out that the truck has been loaded with the tools and materials needed for that days jobs. ???

Makes you wonder.

It scares me though because when it comes to meds, I'm scared of overdosing. Sometimes I just skip them because I "feel" like I took them, but not sure- I don't trust anyone at this point.

Yep, the thing can be right in front of my eyes and I do not see it.
And I go away and look again, and there it is where I expected to see it the first time.

For me both of my kids moved back home so I will hide things in my room. The problem is its one of my Alters doing the hiding so when I go to get something I haven't a clue where it is. I keep finding brand new tools still in packaging all over the place, that I don't even remember getting. I just found a craftsman barbecue set original packing and it was discontinued so it's like a collector set now. So very strange..

Is quite a freaky feeling isn't it? But it does help to know I'm not the only one. Much less scary. Thank you.
