yea I've seen this before, about 4-5 years ago, great stuff but the info is back before the change over to the new standards. now anything to do with somatic problems is now categorized in the somatic disorders and no longer listed with dissociative issues here in America.

here in my location (new York) this article is now used as a good article for the Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders listings ...

Somatic Symptom Disorder
Illness Anxiety Disorder
Conversion Disorder (Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder)
Psychological Factors Affecting Other Medical Conditions
Factitious Disorder
Other Specified Somatic Symptom and Related Disorder
Unspecified Somatic Symptom and Related Disorder because the information in the article is about how dissociation shows itself in physical health problem ways.

the reason my location puts this article in with this grouping is because here in my location dissociation showing itself in physical ways is part of these mental disorders.

great article though, lots of medical information on how the brain works.

Being recategorized into their own section doesn't mean that there's no overlap between dissociation and somatic symptoms, in my opinion. I mean, they moved PTSD from an anxiety disorder to a trauma disorder but that doesn't change the fact that anxiety is still a central component of the disorder. However you categorize the symptoms, dissociation involves segmenting sensory experiences, so somatic therapies are helpful. The DSM 5 is a diagnostic tool, not a treatment planner.

this one pretty much is me:

Dissociation and Dissociative Disorders
Quote:
"I can't remember what I'm doing in the basementI think I came down to get something."

"Wow, I'm home already. But I don't remember driving all this way; the last thing I remember is that stop light half an hour from here!"

"The hand hurts all the time...it burns. How did I hurt it?"

"Yesterday..yesterday, I think I went to work, but.I can't remember exactly."

"The dream, it's always the same, bright lights, loud noises, I wake sweating, my heart pounding."

"You know, I can't seem to remember anything that happened to me from first grade through fifth grade. It feels strange...."

Using the DSM as something godly is quite dangerous.

Also, in Europe, conversion disorder is listed under dissociation.

Manuals are tools, they must be used with a brain attached.

no it doesnt, all I posted was that yes I have seen this and how this article fits in with my own location. here in the City where I am we recognize and go according to the new standards. in 2013 the APA stated physical health problems due to mental health problems including dissociation because of health problems are now their own disorder and not mixed in with dissociative disorders.

here a person can have more than one mental disorder if they fit the diagnostic criteria....

example having depersonalization /derealization disorder (or any other dissociation disorder) and have a somatic disorder like conversion disorder (where dissociative disorders affect and show itself in medical\physical ways)

I wasnt saying it doesnt happen, just that my location does not use this article with in the dissociative category. my location due to the articles content (dissociation causing physical problems and showing itself in physical ways) uses the article with in the somatic category.

your location may do it differently. I know that outside the USA they do still sometimes list somatic disorders in the dissociative category. I wasnt saying they dont. just saying how things are done in ....my own.... location.
