Has anyone tried neurofeedback as a part of their treatment? I've been reading about EEG alpha-theta training and was curious if anyone has used this form of treatment, and what your experience was.

It is very interesting to me.

I actually downloaded an app on my phone that does two different tones in each ear, that I suppose is somehow related. I found it when I did a search for alpha-theta in the AppStore. The name of it is GeniLax - if anyone is interested.

no they dont do the same things...

Genilax is a meditation\relaxation tool. like when someone puts on music and lays back, closes their eyes and relax, go to sleep or what ever they do when they want to relax, not think, not do, just be..

Itried using Genilax but the differing tones in my ears bothered me to no end. I prefer listening to a complete song rather than a never ending tone... beep beep beep or gong gong gong or....well you get the picture. I prefer listening to nature sounds accompanied by actual music.

Neurofeedback is where you have electrodes placed on your head either with goop or with a cap. the electrodes show what your brain activity is on a monitor like watching tv only its lines of brain waves activity. sometimes you look at pictures or lights (just like you would with an EEG test) then based on what your goal or given task is you work to control those brain waves.

in other words Genilax is just listening not doing. you listen to a steady tone which is supposed to cause you to feel relaxed.

neurofeedback is more like an EEG with a twist of working to control your thoughts and behaviors in order to control your brain activity.
Thanks for this!

I tried out the Genilax app today. I played it through the earphones on my phone, and turned it down so low I could barely hear it. Doing some work at my computer. For me, my fingers and toes tingled, like they do when I'm in "alert" mode before I dissociate. My feet were sweating too. Really different. Not sure if that was good or bad. ?

I also found this information about the alpha-theta training. It is still intriguing me. I don't understand how you can actually "control" your brain waves.

I guess our bodies and minds learn to do things automatically over time - this would be in that same category I would assume. Like driving a car, or dodging a ball thrown at you.

I found this app and wanted to share it with you. It's really neat and you can mix your own sounds with music. It has Alpha, Theta and Delta environment choices.

hi trailrunner,

i have been doing NFB for just over 6 months now and have had fantastic results with it. when i first started, i had quick improvements with with my poor sleep, depression, and over all mood. it also helped to reduce much of my fear and anxiety. this has allowed me to work better in therapy with my T (i have been able to trust him more) and there have been no more ruptures in our relationship since.

i started doing alpha/theta training about 2 months ago and it is helping me to bring forth and process many of my dissociated memories and emotions from my early childhood traumas in a safe manner.

when i finally sought out NFB, i literally was at the end of my rope and was losing all hope that i would ever get better or heal...it quite literally felt like my last hope. since then, all that hopelessness has disappeared and i have seen more improvements in my general well being in these last 6 months than i have with 5 years of talk T. NFB has not been a replacement for talk T, but i use it in conjunction with T. it has helped to calm my fears so i can trust and talk more openly about the traumas and it helps to bring forth the memories so they can be processed with the help of my T.

in regards to the App you have found, i am not sure that would have the same effects as using proper EEG equipment. you can always PM me and i am happy to discuss further with you any questions you may have about NFB.
Thanks for this!

I did neurofeedback before and i loved it. it made my headaches worse sometimes but overall it really helped my sleep and concentration. it also totally obliterated my fear of driving
