Discussing Dissociation

I don't know how many of you follow discussing dissociation, but you may or may not know about the history of the woman who runs it. She promotes herself as somewhat of an expert in treating dissociative disorders, but what she neglects to disclose is her long history of ethical complaints against her, made by multiple clients over multiple years.

She used to work in Texas but had to hand in her license in the state of Texas after multiple complaints from clients. She then moved to Australia and set up the discussing dissociation website. Now she has been barred from practise in Australia also. I believe she has moved back to the USA now, and still promotes herself as an expert in the field of dissociation. She is planning to host a conference for dissociative individuals and/or treating therapists in Chicago in October.

This woman has a history that shouldn't be ignored. She has a long established and ongoing pattern of unethical behaviors, including holding sessions at all times of the day and night (in one instance seeing a client in their hotel room at midnight, to sing them to sleep); seeing clients in inappropriate settings (face to face session in restaurants, cars etc); dropping 'out of contact' from clients for weeks on end with no explanation (which is devastating for those who have attachment trauma), and a multitude of other inappropriate and unethical actions over a period of many years. The order below by the Australian Health Complaints Commissioner states that she is supposed to post a copy of the prohibition order on her website, but as far as I can see there is not one there.

Kathy Larrene Broady Todd, trading as ‘Discussing Dissociation’, also known as Kathy Broady, is a general health service provider in Queensland, who provides in-person, video and telephone counselling and psychotherapy services. Following information provided, the Health Complaints Commissioner reasonably believes that Ms Broady Todd has contravened the Code of Conduct applying to general health service providers and that it is necessary to make an Interim Prohibition Order (IPO) to avoid a serious risk to public health, safety and/or welfare.

The sad thing is that she has a lot of really helpful information posted on her website. But she is not a "safe" person for individual therapy, or to give your money to.

thanks for this informationn. I did used to follow it, but lost interest when every other post had something to do with money- pretty sure at one point she wanted money for people to use the support forum she was setting up

I don't really read or follow any dissociation sites anymore. But I think the info you shared is important for people to be aware of Amyjay.

There's many out there that prey on the vulnerable like that.It's very harmful .

I'm glad you didn't get involved with her. Some people are really sucked in by her. I think she intends to be helpful, but she has extremely poor boundaries which ultimately ends up harming people - even if they still don't realize they are being harmed.
And yeah, she does always want money (which is fair enough - people do work to pay the bills - but one of the recurring complaints about her is that she takes the money and doesn't deliver the service in an acceptable time frame / or at all.

I don't really follow any dissociation forums now either. I read here every couple weeks though.

@raging vortex I'm not sure. Do you mean another person who had a forum? Or who was signed up to Kathy Broady's forum? I know a couple of people who are or were signed up, and I know one person who is currently a private client of Kathy's.

Hi @Breaking Dawn, you are always so kind and considerate of others. I am doing really well... therapy is going well and we are right about to dive into the hard stuff. It's scary but necessary. I don't ever feel the need to talk about my therapy or dissociation here so I don't visit very often, but do come to read every now and then.

Hmm, okay. I don't know about another forum. Maybe someone else will remember.

It's totally crazy how she is just deliberately flouting the rules of the prohibition order against her. Her business, Discussing Dissociation is listed as an Australian Business (it has an ABN - that is an Australian business number) and although she has been forbidden to provide or advertise any mental health related services, paid or unpaid, she is still going ahead just doing her thing, and likely still talking with her clients too. She is still as active as ever, continuing her harm. It's a very curious situation. I can see why she is so enticing to many survivors of complex trauma.
