I don't think it is such a good thing. If the marriage is an unhappy one the kids will feel it and that isn't good for anybody. The kids have a much better chance of growing up happy and healthy if their environment is happy and healthy.

If both parents are amicable and there is no tension in the household, then I guess it's OK. But any arguments, stress, cold shoulders and such are perceived by the children as their fault. This is very traumatizing for a child and will affect them through adulthood in their own relationships. If it's not a happy home, take the step.
