Hi everyone, I have some questions
Here is a bit about me I am overweight, and for the last maybe 4 or 5 months have been purging maybe a couple times a week but lately it's been a few times a day. I sometimes binge on food, I have an obsession with food. I feel like it's the only thing that matters My questions is, would this be worth bringing up to my therapist? Or is this nothing to worry about? (I don't have an eating disorder, the purging is just something I do sometimes I just didn't know where else on the forum this would fit)

Hello (((Blue))). This does pose a concern as food and gastric fluids already in your stomach should never be brought up through the esophagus unless the body is naturally trying to rid itself of something harmful. The gastric contents can wear the enamel off your teeth, and damage sensitive tissue in the esophagus. A ruptured esophagus is a concern as well. That's the physical problems. Purging is an eating disorder and yes you should bring it up with your therapist. You need to explore why you feel the need to do this and to try and find out the root cause of your obsession with food so that you can learn to maintain your weight in a healthy way. Overweight or not you're a special and beautiful creation. I care and I want you to take good care of you by talking with your therapist.

i would definitely talk to your therapist about it.
besides what was mentioned above, every time you do it, your electrolytes become imbalanced including potassium which affects the heart. there are many things purging can do to your body, and none of them are good. it is dangerous to do it even a few times. and if you are really unlucky, it can actually kill you. some people have died even just within months of starting to purge. every body is different in terms of what it can tolerate when those types of behaviors are done. |

Hi Blue Bird, thanks for your post.
In addition to what others have posted in response, I would also add that while you are only doing it a couple times a week now, it can easily escalate, and become out of control. I went from doing it (when I first started, in my teens) weekly, to at times doing it 15+ times a day. That perhaps sounds bizarre or absurd, but the complete truth. And twenty years later, I still struggle, though I have now been purge-free for over two years, yay. ![]() I wish you the best. And yes, I believe you should talk with your therapist about it. You never know how helpful they can be, at the very least a listening ear to help you sort through it.

I think that it's good that you're asking this Blue Bird
![]() My feeling on this is that it wouldn't harm to bring this up with your T. Your T may have some insight into some of this and may help you work on some of the reasons why you sporadically do this. Thank you for sharing this with us. |
