I found out today that i've used up all of my allowed mental health office visits, and my insurance company won't pay for any more visits to my therapist. My therapist is a really good match for me; i feel like i need him to help me get my life back, but i can't afford to do self pay. Has anybody been in this situation? Any suggestions?

I was wondering if it is possible to get financial help from church, some kind of organization that would understand your situation. I got help once from a church so I could go see my Mom, during her chemo-therapy. I had a difficult time asking these people for help but in the end, it was worth it as they helped me through this time of need spiritually as well. Just a suggestion for you and best of luck.

i'm not affiliated with any church. . .i've been turned off from organized religion for a long time because of the hypocrisy of so many churchgoers. I know that's an overgeneralization, but that's where I am right now. Thank you for the idea, though. I'm hoping my therapist will give me a greatly reduced rate so I can continue to see him.

Here's another thought: with the Mental Health Parity laws now in place in many states, it may be possible to get insurance coverage after all. It won't be easy, if it's possible, because it's not in their interest to cover you, but it's still worth trying.

See if your therapist and/or doctor can appeal the cut off, saying that the treatment is medically necessary for you. The insurance company is likely to say no the first time, and if you continue the pressure -- hard as it is when you're already not up to par -- they very well may choose to change the decision after the second or third appeal.

Similar to the way they handle things like cancer treatment, I'm afraid. The health insurance business model is not about patient care, which we should all keep in mind come this election.
