Hi everyone. I havent posted anything in a long time. I asked a quesiton in the ask the therapist, but I didnt see a reply. Would you be so kind as to give me some advice? I am overweight, and my health is getting really bad. I have gone through the process to get the gastric bypass surgury, but for insurance purposes I have to lose 32 lbs. first. Heres the problem. I binge eat terribly. I used to cut before but stopped, I always had a weight problem but now its rediculous. I keep thinking if I get that surgury I will look and feel good and not want to binge. If I do binge its not healthy then though.I was going to shoot for the surgury and not tell the surgeon about my binging. What do you think? thanks.

Hi Bigbear,
It's never a good idea to keep information from a doctor. The more they know the more they can help. If bingeing is a problem now it will most likely be a problem after the surgery, the surgery alone isn't going to cure you. Nor is it going to make you lose weight to the point that you're happy with yourself. The root of an eating disorder is deep down issues that need to be addressed. You might do yourself some good to find a therapist to talk these things over with. You may just get to the bottom of why you're bingeing in the first place. You might also want to try Overeaters Anonymous, they have a website www.oa.org that you can go to to find meetings near you. The group is wonderful, helped me through a large stage of my recovery. Don't mistake what I'm saying, I'm not by any means saying don't have the surgery, do especially if it is for your health, but don't be misled by what you think you'll get in return. For that level of peace you need to really work on yourself in a healthy situation, (ie with a therapist etc). I hope this helped. Love and Hugs Tara |

Hi Big bear,
I second all that Tara wrote. For me there was always the addictive nature to eating . with my attention distraction problems I can get lost in thought and loose track of what I am doing. this remains to this day a problem for me. I have to be aware and vigilant when Im around food. I don''t know how the bypass effects consumption. For me there never was a feeling of fullness. I managed to mentally bypass it. There is a simple solution. it requires letting go of the foods you desire. I do not miss my old loves. it is difficult to change . one has to mentally get around the thoughts that a change in diet is some how witholding or unfair or restrictive. Also I recomend staying away from seductive substitues. weightwatchers ice cream wonders taste like the real thing if not better. if it tastes like a duck it is one . My sponsor enlightened me about that one. you will know what triggers you and what doesn't . if you want more and it calls out to you . you have a binge food. ![]() |
