Lately I'm experiencing frequent sudden weight gains that must be water retention. I don't have too much salt in my diet. I'm not really sure what the cause is. I recently did stop a thyroid medication that had suppressed my pituitary gland. And found out I'm going through menopause. Hormonal changes can cause water balance to be off. Not sure what to do. Are diuretics okay to use?

Hi, archipelago. I would see your doc before taking on any treatment to make sure the cause is known. Please keep us informed!
Thanks for this!

I just did see my doctor. He was concerned that the thyroid was too much and later the labs said that was a problem. I don't know if he would see me again so soon. And I don't think he takes calls about such things. While it would be great to know the cause, given so many recent changes, it probably is impossible for anyone to pin it down. So I just thought of a simple remedy which is to take a mild diuretic to get the water off.

Well, there are a few OTC diuretics that are ok for occasional use if you are careful. Salt and sugar both cause me to retain water - drinking a lot of water actually helps me by purging the salt.

I don't consume any sugar and little salt and try to drink a lot of water. I think there was some sort of imbalance, but luckily for the past few days it's been better and I haven't taken water pills.

I believe that my body was thrown off by taking too much thyroid, which suppressed by pituitary. That gland produces a hormone that regulates water balance. Plus I made a lot of med changes all at once, getting rid of some and adding others. It was just too much change chemically for my body.

I don't have that swollen, water-logged feeling now and my weight is also dropping according to the weight loss plan I have in place so I'm just hoping that it stays this way. If not, I'll contact my doctor to have some more labs to see what might be going on.

Water retention is such a downer. One day you fit in your jeans and then next day you dont.
